I recently replaced the tail spring on Elite 755. MAM did not have any in
stock, and were uncertain when they would be getting a production run heat
treated. It cost the same to heat treat a dozen pieces as it does to do one
spring. There has been different designs made of the tail spring on the Elite.
Including a tube in tube which gave a total thickness of .125 wall which is
what was with my kit. The tail spring on the SR2500 can work, but is
significantly thicker material, and it fits in the swivel ball rear mount (forgot
the proper name). If the moose stinger is used, then that rear mount needs
to be replaced.
Info from MAM on the Elite tail spring specs:
- minimum 1 X .125 wall 4130 or 5130 steel
- the tube needs to be heat treated to 200,000 lbs/psi Ultimate tensile
strength
I opted to use 1 X .156 4130 and upgraded the forward mounting brackets
as well. The original were 1/8" and MAM recommended either 3/16" or 1/4"
stock upgrade. The SR 2500 forward mounting brackets are 1/4 " and have a
different bolt pattern than the Elite.
The heat treating shops wanted $450.00 - $650.00 to do the one piece. It
pays to shop and beg.......... I got it done for $250.00. Thanks goodness for
friends and networking.
The upgrades added approx 1 1/2 lbs to the tail. I find it more positive for
ground handling. (less wiggly)
