Sure would like to see someone try a Borer. I had a chance a couple years
ago, when someone offered to lend me one. But with my cowl and need for a
spacer, it wouldn't fit. I realize the cruise speed would be less, but am
really curious to see how fast it can come off the water, and what the
climb
rate would be.

My prediction for 150 hp is less than 10 seconds (in near no wind
conditions) and 1500 fpm. If not, then it is not worth it.

The only way I get less than 10 seconds with mine, is with a good head
wind.
Top climb for me solo, is 1100 fpm. That is with the Sensenich 74 X 54
and
150 hp.

Hi everybody, summer greetings!

I've been running a McCauley 74X56 (now re-pitched 54") that was on my
0-320-A2B on the Champion GCBC it came from.

Built the engine up to 160+hp; the prop worked great at 56" on wheels and
then I went on MAM amphibs, after trying a friends' 74X52 I had the 56"
re-pitched to 54". Works quite well.

Off the water in fairly quick times at gross+ and cruises at 80kts IAS at
2400rpm.

Max static rpm is 2400 and max level flight rpm is 2550.

Not getting to the 2700rpm where all the horsepower lives. Possibly a bit
over-propped.

So, to complicate the equation I bought an 80X40 Borer (McCauley) off a
150hp Champion GCBC.
I intend to install this prop as-is and verify performance but I'm
expecting
to need to re-pitch to about 43". Oh', as well, there was a 2" McCauley
spacer came with the prop if anybody needs one let me know.

Has anyone else tried a Borer? Results? Numbers? Advice? I know that
"rule-of-thumb" is: 1" of pitch = 100rpm

As an aside to this I heard today from Carm Titus that his cousin Mike
Titus
(longtime Leavens employee who has helped many of us Rebel types with our
engines) was working on a plane at Brampton in recent weeks and
momentarily
distracted by a bystander got hit in the head by a prop blade. Carm said
Mike is going to lose one eye. You can't be too careful.

Thanks and best regards to everyone, Angus

7 or 8 seconds is very fast off the water. I can only get under 10 seconds

Your top speed is very close to mine at almost the same top rpm. And what

[rebel-builders] Props

Post by Walter Klatt » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:20 pm

So you finally figured out how to catch those lakers, huh? Sounds like you
are having a great summer out there. Can't say the same out here,
weatherwise, at least not on the weekends. But it is not over yet... Hope
to get some more fishing in later when the water cools enough to get the
trout biting again. Have just been letting them fatten up for now.

Rebflyer

[rebel-builders] props

Post by Rebflyer » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:37 pm

Hi Dennis,
I went from a Warp drive to a Catto. I absolutely love it. The Rpm
numbers they gave me were right on for static and only 25 RPM low for wot. 100
hrs this year and no signs of erosion. I chose to go high static rpm for
quicker take off and sacrifice cruise. Most of my flying is lake hopping in the
evenings.
Whats great about Catto is just tell them you desires and they build the
prop.
I'm putting one on the Long-ez I'm building. I know of 2 cases where
either lost nuts or even exhaust pipes have gone thru the prop and it keeps on
going.
I would let him put on the anti erosion tape on the leading edge. It was
perfect.

60's not too much for 160HP on wheels Mike. 58 works great on wheels with
150 HP.

If you find it's a little coarse you can take it to Hope or Leavens for
about $250 and get it repitched finer

74dm6-0-60, may have come off a pa-140 owner says

Does anyone know if this would work on my setup, assume pitch is 60, way
to
much but perhaps it can be repitched

I don't know much about props so any help would be nice

It will work. Recommended for wheels cruise is a 58" Sensenich
prop. Many of the members recommend a 56" prop. The reason I
respond is that I am currently flying with 74DM-6-61 Sensenich
prop and seem to have pretty good performance so far. I am
getting 1100 feet vertical speed and go 120 mph IAS at 70%
power for a 1500 pound aircraft. I have a 160HP Lycoming.
Prop came off a Tri-Pacer which has similar specs.
I have so few hours (in the 40 hour fly off period) that I do
not have exact numbers for my aircraft yet, but am working on
them.
However, I fully expect to have to change my prop pitch in the
future. However, I do not know by how much. In the mean time
I am working on putting fairings on the landing gear cross
members (ala Sloan). That should clean it up a bit and allow
me to better determine a better pitch.

Walter Klatt

[rebel-builders] props

Post by Walter Klatt » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:58 pm

I was getting 1100 fpm on amphibs (solo) with my old 150 hp Lyc. That's
because I had the 74 X 54 Sensenich. Finer pitch is much better, and is not
necessarily bad for cruise or fuel consumption, as I have mentioned here on
this list many times.

For the 160 hp, would recommend 56 pitch on wheels and 54 on floats. You
would cruise at slightly higher rpm, but that doesn't hurt your engine one
bit, and you will really appreciate the extra performance.

I was using the Warp (72 dia 3 blade) when I was on wheels, and was getting
1600 fpm with that one.

And since it's a used prop you should robably measure the length to make
sure it hasn't been dressed beyond limits.

Mike,
I believe Sensenich will repitch a metal prop a total of 4 inches over its
life. You might want to confirm that with them and review the prop log to
see if any of that 4' has been used up.

[rebel-builders] Props

There was a guy out of Juneau Alaska with a 81" borer on his Rebel... Murphy
used to have a photo of it on their website titled "one tired Rebel".

Yes, I got the HTML thing right after I sent the second email from work.

Here's the question: A friend asked me why no one puts a borer prop or a
longer one on the rebel or elite. I didn't know why. I know the 180 hp
cubs and such are using longer ones. CW

Angus McKenzie

I use an 80-42 Borer with my amphibs and I'd use it on wheels too unless I was going on a long trip then I'd switch back to the McCauley 74-56.

And, by the way, I've got a Leavens over-hauled, packaged to ship, Hartzell constant speed with the Woodward govenor and prop bolts to sell, if anyone's interested....?
It came off an 0-320 on RV6 that was repowered with an 0-360. I was going to try it on my Rebel but decided to seek out a newer 82-44 Borer instead.
