Hi All
I've just had a phone call from a Renegade owner in England wondering what
the soft material is called that is used between the wing leading edge
structure and the final covering fabric ? He's recovering his wing and the
manual makes no reference to this strip of softer stuff that is stuck on to
the leading edge before the fabric is applied. Any ideas guy's ?
Thanks

I believe that would be called polyester quilt batting. At least that's
what I used on my flaperon leading edges. Should be available at any fabric
store.

Perhaps a review of AC-43-13 & the fabric supplier's data would answer
the questions.

Renegade Wing Covering

I asked a few questions at our local airport today, of a fellow that
rebuilds antique airplanes, many from the 1920's & 1930's. He uses
"FELT" (like on a pool table)to cover the rough places such as edges of
metal, rivet & screw heads & anything protruding that could even
remotely have a chance of chafing and hurting the cover. He gets it at
Wal-Mart!
He uses Ceconite or Poly-fiber for most of his work now days. But
occasionally when some one is striving for a perfect restoration he will
use cotton or linen, & he has done several award winners.
Today he was working on 3 Boeing F4-B1 fuselages, and has 5 more lined
up to do.

He does recommend use the fabric system supplier's data and
recommendations as a first choice for "how too" information, and
secondly AC-43-13. Some conflict does exist. If the job is being done
per an STC for a certified plane he follows the STC. He also say's for
a home built...you can do as you want...But be safe!

Dick Wampach SR-108 (no fabric)!

Perhaps a review of AC-43-13 & the fabric supplier's data would answer
the questions.

Rumour has it that it also prevents all the pinholes that like to appear
when the polybrush is applied. I did not use it but and I did have fun
with pinholes. That's when the sealant gets sucked out of individual
holes between the fabric weave.
