[rebel-builders] wing tip rib W-145

Post by Ken » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:25 pm

Hi Ron

From memory this is different than the older (non electronic) manual.
The left and right tips are different due to the wing rib flanges being
inboard on one tip and outboard on the other. I'm fairly certain that
my W-145's are flush with the skins and entirely outboard of the wing
rib with no overlapping flanges. And that my W-145 flanges point outboard.

There was a bracket shown for the side that the wing rib flanges point
outboard as I recall to keep the W-145 entirely outboard of the wing rib.

If no one else answers and it's still mysterious, I'll dig out the old
paper manual and see if there are anymore clues.

Preparing for wing tips, I'm locating the wing tip rib (W-145). In Ch. 11,
p.1 (Fig. 11.1.1) the manual says to put the tip rib "over the wing skins"
and, as shown in the figure, with the flanges positioned on the inward side.
When I tried to do that, in order to get the tip rib far enough forward to
be at the correct 1/2" forward of the rear end of the flaperon, I couldn't
get it to fit at all without a very ugly squishing (stressing) of the wing
skins.

However, if I put the W-145 inside the wing skins, with the flanges pointing
outward, everything works great -- including the flaperon hinge bolt access,
etc. IMHO, closure of the rear end of the wing tip will look better with the
flanges inside the wing tip. Pictures at http://n254mr.com/node/187 &

Is my orientation of the W-145 with flanges outward a bad idea for some
reason?

Is this yet another place where the manual is, uh, bogus? So it seems.

[rebel-builders] wing tip rib W-145

Thanks, Ken. FWIW, the most recent manual version I have for Ch. 11 is dated
29/06/98.

On the right side, where the main rib flanges are out, there is a piece of
ST-40 angle aligned vertically at the hinge bracket, up against which the
right W-145 will sit. Regardless, on both wings the W-145's fit fine if the
W-145 flanges are out, but definitely do not fit, if flanges are in.

To complicate this a smidge further, the manual describes and shows the
W-145 flanges overlapping (and using) the existing main tip rib rivet
line... which means the W-145 is connected to the main tip rib. In my plan,
the three rivets on top and three on bottom are actually going into the
narrow extension or lip of the wing skin.

If it would fit, overlapping the existing main tip rib's rivet line would be
a stronger combination of structure for attachment of the W-145, a clear
advantage, but the only one I can think of. In addition, if it's lined up
overlapping the main rib, there would be a smaller gap between the W-145 and
the flaperon. That may be some kind of benefit, but it's pretty
inconsequential IMHO, given the overall overlap of the wing tip in this area
anyway.

I'd appreciate confirming how yours are aligned when you have a chance,
though I really don't see how I could build it like the manual, at least not
without making some new custom W-145's that would fit _and_ trimming off the
entire lip of wing skin that extends out past the main ribs.

Ron

On the left, the W-145 is up against the outer, non-flanged side of the
main tip rib.

Ron

I assume you've finished your wingtips by now but I did finally confirm
that both my W145 flanges point outward. The tips overlap them about 1/2".

The wandering daughter had a good trip. Your hospitality is appreciated
by all of us.

Thanks, Ken. And whew! Just your pre-check confidence on this point was
enough for me to blaze ahead with flanges out. :-) Tips aren't finished
yet, but I will start putting holes through Dave Fife's beautiful glass work
soon, maybe tomorrow.

Whatever hospitality we can muster will always be welcome to you and your
delightful offspring.
