[rebel-builders] rebel elevator mods

Andrew,

This mailing list will not transmit attachments to the list, so your picture
didn't come to me or others via the list.

If we're referring to the same mod, my elevator rib stiffeners connect to
the elevator tube with three rivets. One under the corners of the top and
bottom skins, and one in the aft side middle of the tube. See two pics
starting at *http://tinyurl.com/cgru4z*

I hope this helps.

Hi

It's now time for the elevators that the previous builder built, took
apart, and re-ordered most of the peices... I have read all the posts and
viewed all the files I could find on the elevator mods as well as seen what
the previous builder did when he built them, The skin doublers look pretty
straight forward, but the rib stiffner I would like a second opinion on. I
have attached a picture of what I think would work from reading the posts,
would I be better to have 2 rivets attaching it to the tube? Any input would
be apreciated.

Thanks

Andrew

I noticed that my attachment didn't make it, I uploaded it to the rebel elevator files section

Got it. Personally, I wouldn't do it the way you've shown it. The problem
being addressed is relatively high torque around the tip, which in turn
makes the outer rib turn around the elevator spar tube. I don't think it's
stiffness of the rib itself that's the problem here or, to the extent it is,
it's due to force in rotation around the tube. The reinforcement needs to
help keep the rib from rotating around the spar tube. With just one rivet
connection to the tube, as your model shows, and having no additional
leverage against the axis of rotation, that wouldn't help keep the rib from
rotating around the spar tube.

To put this another way, the rib can still collapse along its flange edges
in that 3/4" or so between the stiffener you've modeled and the tube.

Not sure if that's clear or not. If you look at the way mine was done (prior
photo link) when the rib is forced in rotation around the tube, say down,
the top tube rivet holds on, and if the rib is pushed rotated up, the bottom
tube rivet holds against any rotation... I hope. <g>

BTW, when retrofitting, go ahead and drill out and replace the 4th tube
rivet too so you can take the cap off and dump out the rivet debris. If you
don't, the rattle you'll hear inside the tube during every preflight will
drive you nuts. :-)

Seems I vaguely recall someone with a picture of this failure, but I don't
see it in the files archives. Perhaps someone will pop up with it.

In response to Ralph's query, I don't believe there is a factory service
bulletin on this issue, but that's true of most if not all the mods that the
Rebel builders community has found over the years to be prudent, if not
essential.

Ron
