[rebel-builders] Gross weight (canada)

Your own fingers are better than holes in your wife's fingers Andrew ;)

Depends on what you want. Max resale value, safety, and easy
insurability as a Murphy Rebel or a legal max utility heavy hauler at
moderate speeds. Heavy engine or light engine. Are you likely to sell it
or would you rather part it out. MDRA wanted a new letter (and fee) when
my kit changed hands. Personally with a heavy engine of moderate power,
or for floats, I'd disavow any knowledge of the previous builder or the
Murphy name, call it an Byers779 or such, and put a high gross weight
down for insurance and legal reasons. Of course I'd never recommend
that to anyone else but that does let you pick the weight with no
interference. I don't know if the Murphy name actually helps with the
cost of insurance but I think it makes it easier to obtain. I don't
agree with calling it a Murphy if you plan to exceed factory recommended
weights but since 1730 on floats is OK, I'm happy at moderate airspeeds
with 1730 on wheels. I cruise slow and enjoy economy more than speed. I
will have a utility problem at 1730 on floats though.

Yes folks do indeed seem to rivet the aileron leading edge aluminum on
before the precover inspections. There are lots of holes in the spar for
an inspection.

Thanks for all the replies, invites, info and tips!! Too late though, already drilled my finger, Guess I need to replace my block of wood sooner...

Going to send in my letter of intent to the MDRA but was wondering weather to put the gross weight at 1650 or 1730. I have yet to make a choice on engines and have noticed some Rebels with lower gross weights as well with the lighter engines. I am building for wheels now but floats are a thought for the distant future. Also the previous owner filed a letter of intent weather that matters or not.

Also wondering weather the ailerons need a pre cover inspection before riveting the aluminium skin on the leading edge (I know they need it before the fabric goes on)

Thanks

Hi Andrew !

You might as well put down 1,730 for now .....
it's not toooo critical at this point.

It really doesn't matter until you get the flight permit,
AND do the Climb Test. Whatever weight you complete
the climb test with is the weight you get !

It's best to do several climb tests at progressive weights,
to be safe, and satisfy yourself as to handling qualities.

Much will depend on which engine you choose, and
whether you want to pay the "Nav Scam" tax -- there is
NO FEE if your max gross is under 1,320 lb. !! Otherwise,
it's currently about $75 per year, and could increase !

Rebels with the 100 hp. 912-ULS actually DO fly well
at 1,650 lb., and have passed the climb test at that. It's
nice to have the useful load legally ....

I would just go to 1730 initially, you would just need to endure more paperwork fileing, when you go to floats and want to do the weight upgrade. My Transport Canada inspector said "next just go 1730 from the start". It will eliminate a second climb test report and associated paperwork for a weight change, and a restricted C of A until the flight test was completed. Reality is legally once you do the weight change your gross weight will be 1730 whether on wheels, floats, ski's or amphibs....

Thank you,

bransom

I'm forgetting ...is 1730 the magic number normally used for an amphib
Rebel? (I thought it was higher but may have confused it with elite)

A current Rebel (or old with MAM's upgrade) is 1650 on wheels plus 5% on
floats which makes 1730.
