FUS87/85 tail spring bolt head positioning

Post by schaumr » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:21 pm

Hello everyone. This question is for those of you with the FUS87/85 tail
spring attach fittings.

Due to the rearward slant of tail spring bulkhead FUS49, the "heel" of FUS87
must be ground down to sit in the bottom of FUS30 while "leaning back"
against FUS85 (which is riveted to FUS49). After this shaping, the material
at the bottom of FUS87 is no longer uniform in thickness (wedge-like).

Later in the manual, we are instructed to drill up through FUS30 into FUS87
and install an AN6 bolt with the head resting on the wedge-like "heel" of
FUS87.

The trouble is, the head of the bolt does not sit flush with the inside surface
of FUS87, and essentially rests only on the thicker part of the "heel".

What have others done to solve this issue? Is there an issue? I am planning
to fabricate a wedge that, when drilled out and placed on/in FUS87, will bring
this bottom surface back parallel to the bottom of FUS30 and thereby provide
a good surface for the bolt head to sit on.

Since this bolt will be under tension when taxiing and landing, I am thinking it
needs to be well supported....or am I over analyzing this?

Thanks for your time,

Rob
