[rebel-builders] Drilling holes strut
[rebel-builders] Drilling holes strut
Hi Mike
I have no experience in this, but my gut feeling is not to weaken the strut
in any way at all. I'd look at making a bracket that attaches to the outside
of the strut with something like large jubilee clips without making any
holes in the strut at all.

I was wondering if anyone had a problem with drilling and tapping 2 AN3
holes in the top of my Elite wing strut, about = length to mount a camera
to. Any structural reason not to?
Thanks for input.

Hi Mike !
I'm with Nigel !! Maybe you could use large gear clamps
around the strut to fasten a bracket. I really wouldn't want
to drill any holes !
On TV shoots, the guys even use duct tape !! :-)

[rebel-builders] Drilling holes strut
My latest camera mount is a step up from previously using duct tape.
I created a clamp out of 3/4" plywood that is cut to follow the shape of the
strut. I placed felt on the inside of the plywood to limit scuffing the
paint. Bolts pull the clamp halves together and is very secure with no
camera vibration.
No need to drill.

Can anybody out there make me a tracing of the profile of a wing strut and
send it to me on email. I don't have any scraps left from the build. Just a
pencil outline of the end profile put on a scanner?
Thanks,

Will do Mike. I'll pickup my scrap and drop it on my scanner and send you a
scan tomorrow. I'll also post to the builder's photo archive.
For float folks, Murphy uses the same extrusion for the wing struts and
float spreader bars. At least this is true for the Elite/1800 amphib combo.
So, you can mount your camera either place. You just have to make your
camera mount adjustable for level spreader bars or angled wing struts.

Eric,
Could you post a couple photos of your plywood camera mount? Are you still
using the same camera you started out with?
Thanks, from Sequim.

Ron and Mike: I emailed you directly a picture of the camera mount and wing
strut cross section. Check your junk mail if it doesn't arrive.
I also uploaded these images to the archive image files in the: Elite -
Miscellaneous section.
Basically, I now have a general purpose plywood strut clamp and an aluminum
contraption to hold the camera. Currently, I am only using a 1-axis
adjustable setup between the two. Next, I'll replace my simple 1-axis hinge
with a 2-axis solution, later 3-axis. All made with scrap parts.

Mike a quick way to get a profile of a surface like this is to wrap it in
saran wrap, then use a can of expansion foam to squirt a blob of foam over
it a couple inches thick. Once it sets up you can cut the ends with a razor
blade, then run it through a band saw to give it square ends. Quick and
easy, and very accurate.

Mike,
If the good denizens of the Rebel List dont have a scrap of strut to trace
here are two alternates. The machinist supply houses have a tool that has
many small wires in a holder that allows the wires to take the form of
objects it is pressed against. That allows duplication of the contour.
Another option would be to hold a piece of rough (80) sandpaper tightly on
the strut and sand a block of foam to the correct contour.

[rebel-builders] Drilling holes strut
Another good idea...
I got the profile pic from Eric, thanks, that will work fine. I am going to
mount a helmet video camera to it and then keep the recorder inside.

Thanks for the idea,
Can anybody out there make me a tracing of the profile of a wing strut and
send it to me on email. I don't have any scraps left from the build. Just
a
pencil outline of the end profile put on a scanner?
Thanks,

My latest camera mount is a step up from previously using duct tape.
I created a clamp out of 3/4" plywood that is cut to follow the shape of
the
strut. I placed felt on the inside of the plywood to limit scuffing the
paint. Bolts pull the clamp halves together and is very secure with no
camera vibration.
No need to drill.
