Airframe clean up

Post by SWSLOANLK » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:27 pm

Hi Bob

I want to thank you and the other builders for there input on the increase in
speed with the reflex position at 6 degrees. I just completed my first annual
inspection and incorporated a detent into my flap handle for the reflex
position and installed a new handle on the mixer arm with a zero position and
six degree position for the ailerons. ( seperate flaps and ailerons ) I was
very pleased with the 4.5 mph increase in speed and for the comments the
group made as to control feel and pitch changes.

One addtiional question, has anyone stalled the rebel with the controls in
the reflex position, if so are there any abnormal effects. I just like to
test everything.

On a closing note, you cruise at 118 mph @ 2450 rpm with a 74 by 56 prop and
no stream line fairings. It would also be helpfull if you know the engine
manifold pressure and or full flow is at this setting. For a comparison my
rebel with all the clean up work that i have done turning a 72 by 56 prop on
my IO240 will cruise at 118 mph at 2000 ft @ 19.5" mp @2290 rpm on a fuel
flow of 4.7 gph. (approx 55% power )

It is amazing to me how much additional cruise performance we can get from
the rebel using simple fairings. Another performance increase we get and we
don't talk much about it is R/C. I did not see much change in the max R/C at
70 mph during the airframe clean up but did see a large increase in the
cruise climb R/C .

We all spend a lot of time building our airplanes. Spend a little more on
cleaning up the airframe. The performance increase is well worth it and it's
fun!

Best Regards
Steve Sloan 536R

Airframe clean up

Post by Mike Davis » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:27 pm

Just thought I'd take a moment to let everybody know that I'd be happy to
add any information you want to share to the web site. It's on my own
machine, and there's lots of space so don't hold back.

Mike

Hi Steve !

I'm glad you had such a large sped gain - I guess it's larger
than most because of the excellent job you've done on cleanup !!

I have done stall series in all flap positions - there's
nothing nasty about negative, but it DOES increase the stall speed
by about 3 mph, and the stall might be jusy a bit sharper. Nothing
to worry about, but I always make it a policy to come out of negative
to neutral when turning onto base leg - just in case I get distracted,
AND fail to watch my speed, I won't get surprised !! I usually put
the flaps down after I'm established on final.

I, too, would like to know my manifold pressure & fuel flow
(it's in the 10 gph area !!! :-( ). A decent set of engine instruments,
especially an EI Scanner, would really be beneficial !! Coming soon ...
but first, paint and amphibs !! :-)

Something that would really benefit this list would be a detailed
list of all the little cleanups you've done - I know that's a big job,
but a point-by-point set of instructions/photos would just be invaluable !
It would become a permanent resource that all could add to ...

There's NO time constraint, but we'd all REALLY appreciate it,
if you could start chipping away at it - maybe add a 'tip-of-the-month' ??
Maybe Mike could find a special section on the web site for it ...
(and maybe similar things, like evaluations of different things, like
strobe light packages, wing tips, leading edge cuffs ... )

Thanks, Steve !!!
