Prop selection

Post by Rebecca Brownell » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:07 pm

Hi again
I have to choose a prop fairly soon.I have an 0-320 160hp.It'll be on
wheels for a year or so then on amphibs.I'm hoping to get a prop that
willsuit for when its on the floats. What is the concensus on the
Prince props.Wayne sugested that I find a prop that will just redline
when the plane is on wheels. It should then hopefully suit well when on
floats.Anyone with experience with the prince prop that might share
what I should be asking for?Any other proven lightweight props?
thanks
Jason

Prop selection

Post by indabush » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:11 pm

I just sent my prop (74 X 47) back to Lonnie Prince for a repitch (free +
freight).

On wheels with O-320, 150 hp:
Level cruise 2800 rpm +
On take-off roll 2550
Cruise is only about 105 mph at 2450 at only 1450 lb

I am suggesting a 1.5" increase in pitch. I don't plan any takes offs from
500 ft runways.
Lonnie says static rpm can be lower with his prop, versus others. I am
waiting for him to review the numbers and call me.

Would you guess your engine is pretty close to 150hp? and what is your
climb rate now?

Let us know the difference after you get the prop back repitched.
Thanks,
-Ben

Ben, the climb test report showed 765 ft/min at 1800 gross. Climb at
normal load condition is 1100+ ft.min

Prop Selection

Post by indabush » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:40 pm

Just thought I would give you an update on my 3rd and last prop. (NBO is
and O-320 - 160 hp on wheels).

I started with a Prince 72X46 which was way too fine. I now have a 74X52,
and the rpm's are right on. Level full throttle cruise at 3,000 ft is
2,750 rpm and climb-out is 2,450 to 2,500 rpm. Take-off performance was
not adversely affected. Gained at least 7 to 8 mph. The aircraft now flys
"on the step" and feels much happier. Lonnie Prince said he would make it
right and he did.

PS on recent topics:
- I still have D5 in shop - never did figure out what it was for.
- I have the Murphy tail wheel, with a aluminum tail spring that has been
reduced in thickness by 1/8", and ground handling is right on. Breakout
is not difficult, but it locks and tracks when required.

... for what it's worth

What's your speeds, Mike at WOT and in the climb plus ROC. I get 2450 at 70
mph in the climb on floats with a 74/47 with 150 hp.

Prop Selection

Hi Steve,

Not quite sure about WOT speed, but I think it is around 120+ mph. On
climb I start off at 80 mph at the rpm stated and then pull back the
throttle a bit to set cruise climb at 90 to 95 mph around 2,400 rpm. That
last inch of throttle doesn't get you very much. Rate of climb varies
depending on load and temp, but I'm in the 1,000 to 1,500 range. The
aircraft climbs like an elevator, so I don't worry about it much.
