Hi All !

I'm hearing several builders are having trouble contacting
the factory.....

I guess there should have been something on the web site ...
they are moving all the offices from the 2nd floor to the main floor,
and all the computers & phones are disconnected !!

Should be all set up again within a week or so ... they are
building new offices, painting, etc. .... They are still getting
the odd call & email out, but it's awkward.

Sorry !! Please bear with them - it's all part of streamlining
operations to keep costs down, and keep your parts available.
Still better to be a bit slower than not at all ! ;-)

[rebel-builders] Contact with the factory

Post by Ron Shannon » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:07 pm

Bob,

While it's good to have an explanation, many reasonable people may conclude
it's not a justification. It is almost 2009, and procedures for preserving
continuity of communication during an office move are not only well
established, but easy. The unavoidable conclusion is that customer
communication is not a priority -- not a good message for any business.

My two cents.

Ron

Bob Patterson

[rebel-builders] Contact with the factory

Post by Bob Patterson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:07 pm

I'm sorry - that wasn't worded well !

The phones are STILL BEING ANSWERED, since VOICE MAIL
is STILL WORKING, and EMAILS are STILL BEING RECEIVED !
In fact, continuity of receiving communications IS being preserved.

The delay will be in ANSWERING !

I would hope that a reasonable person, knowing that they
are short-staffed, and that those few staff are working hard to
get moved and operating again, would be a bit patient and
understanding if they didn't get an INSTANT RESPONSE to their query !
It might be a week or so ...

OF COURSE they WANT to look after customers, and have many
things to work on - perhaps too many ! Move desks & computers,
paint walls, run wiring, move printers, keep manufacturing parts,
prepare quotes for parts, order materials, get shipping prices,
ship parts orders, ship complete aircraft kits, try to find new,
experienced CAD operators, look for new CNC operators,
try to figure out what parts a customer needs to repair his
crashed aircraft - from one picture of the wreck, then price
all those parts, and send him the quote, ......
(No - I'm not making any of that up !)

THAT is the EXPLANATION. Perhaps there is no justification
for not being perfect, or even average .... One can only explain
the circumstances, and hope for understanding.

It's like that old saying : "When you are up to your A**
in alligators, it's hard to remember that your original target was
to drain the swamp" !!

I suppose if you had a few hundred grand deposit paid on a new
Eclipse jet right now, you might have a reason for such anxiety ....

Please don't shoot the messenger !!

(Sorry - I'm having a bad day ! ) ;-)

[rebel-builders] Contact with the factory

Post by Craig Walls » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:07 pm

Kudos to you, Bob, for attempting to keep all of these happenings looking
normal. And I appreciate the way you promote Murphy products (you've always
done this) and help builders like me.

As far as customer service, Jeff is the only bright spot at MAM. During our
visit last July it was embarrassingly obvious that no one else there was
even vaguely interested in the fact that we had bought one of their products
or had traveled a long way to see the factory. I practically had to force
myself on Darrell to get him to acknowledge my presence. That is not
customer service. That is customer no-service! Anyone willing to admit it
can see the slow change and progress toward eventual close down. As a
builder with a long way to go I only hope I can get anything I need from
them before this happens.

[rebel-builders] Contact with the factory

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:07 pm

Is it fair to assume that none of the "complainers" have attempted to run a
manufacturing facility in the last 4 or 5 years in North America. Many
facilities have the lights dim.. if barely on at all. I know that our
injected plastic plant's gross sales have dropped from around 10 million a
year... to less than 3 in the last 3 years... times aren't good. At 23+
years in... I'm surprised Darryl even bothers to get out of bed in the
morning to drive into the factory before noon... I know by now I wouldn't
be... and don't as matter of fact!

[rebel-builders] Contact with the factory

Post by Craig Walls » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:07 pm

Wayne, there's a difference in complaining and stating facts. Another fact
is that if you're in business, you act like it, whether you have 23 yrs in
or 50. Otherwise you don't stay in business. :)

Kudos to you, Bob, for attempting to keep all of these happenings looking
normal. And I appreciate the way you promote Murphy products (you've
always
done this) and help builders like me.

As far as customer service, Jeff is the only bright spot at MAM. During
our
visit last July it was embarrassingly obvious that no one else there was
even vaguely interested in the fact that we had bought one of their
products
or had traveled a long way to see the factory. I practically had to force
myself on Darrell to get him to acknowledge my presence. That is not
customer service. That is customer no-service! Anyone willing to admit
it
can see the slow change and progress toward eventual close down. As a
builder with a long way to go I only hope I can get anything I need from
them before this happens.

I'm sorry Bob but from my experience they have been short staffed for over
two years. Voice mail is not customer service. Pricing parts is a
no-brainer
in today's computer age. "THAT is the EXPLANATION. Perhaps there is no
justification for not being perfect, or even average ...." You hit it on
the
head here Bob, they're not even average - THEY SUCK.

And what I'm really getting tired of is that the only place you can get
any
information on the Company or "response" from the factory is right here on
this builders list - not from them of course but from fellow builders -
and
I'm
guessing that Mike Davis isn't receiving financial support from Murphy so
that
we can communicate in this manner.

Oh yeah, I'm not having a bad day either. But on this US Holiday -
Thanksgiving, one of the things I'm thankful for is that I've figured out
how to
finish the rebuild of my Rebel without needing anything from the factory
due

to the talent of my Dad - Simon, and brother - Matt.

[rebel-builders] Contact with the factory

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:07 pm

Sure you have to act like you're in business Craig, that wasn't my
point...... but you expecting the principal owner of said operation to take
time out of his busy schedule, for you, when he has someone delegated
(sounds like Jeff) to show you around is a little much. I can't keep track
of how many that have said MAM had a year left in the last 15 years (even me
at least once!), yet Darryl is one of the very few that has survived in the
last decade of kitplane start ups and Chapter 11's. Sounds like things are
rough out there, but if anyone can pull it out of the hole it's Darryl
Murphy.

I've been building these things since 1993 Craig... have driven right past
the factory in Chilliwack a few times and have never felt the need to drop
in and tour the facility (and see the friends I've made over the many years
of dealing with MAM.... as they have work to do and I understand that). I've
also never felt the need to go to the Ford plant in Oakville ... to see
where the wife's vehicle came from.

Someone doesn't just show up at our plastics plant expecting a tour of the
facilities by myself, my partner or any employee for that matter just
because they bought some of our enviroseal electrical boxes or a TRW
seatbelt mechanism at a garage sale... or a Masterlevel at Canadian Tire. As
matter of fact we don't give tours, period, to protect proprietary processes
and I've always been surprised that Murphy even offered the "drop in and
tour" option, to even direct buyers.

Regards,
Wayne

[rebel-builders] Contact with the factory

Post by james.smith » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:07 pm

Wayne, you are correct, but I did sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night.
On a serious note, the fact that Murphy still exists after 23 years is a credit
to Darryl and MAM. That being said, deplorable customer service and the
abandonment of a sales and marketing function by the company (I am
referring to pre-Patterson Aero Sales at this point) is not the way to see a
company through trying economic times.

Luckily, the people on this list have access to the techinical support that you
can provide as well as the sage advice of many others. And let us not forget
the enthusiastic efforts of Bob P trying to make a difference.

PS - in my day job, I'm a CPA/Accountant so I'm pretty well versed in the
financial challenges of running privately owned small businesses in a both a
good and not-so-good economy.

[rebel-builders] Contact with the factory

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:07 pm

lol James...

The "arms length" kit sale side of things may have more to it than is being
spoken and may very well be the only way to stay afloat right now.

As for my tech advise... I've been saying for over a decade I'm gonna get a
1-900 # . Maybe that'll be farmed out next and I can... ;O)

How's your father making out with his float build?

Wayne

to Darryl and MAM. That being said, deplorable customer service and the
abandonment of a sales and marketing function by the company (I am
referring to pre-Patterson Aero Sales at this point) is not the way to see
a
company through trying economic times.

Luckily, the people on this list have access to the techinical support
that you
can provide as well as the sage advice of many others. And let us not
forget
the enthusiastic efforts of Bob P trying to make a difference.

PS - in my day job, I'm a CPA/Accountant so I'm pretty well versed in the
financial challenges of running privately owned small businesses in a both
a
good and not-so-good economy.

[rebel-builders] Contact with the factory

Post by james.smith » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:07 pm

Wayne,

Progress on Dad's floats has stalled right now - mainly because all the parts
for my Rebel are back in the shop hangar. After all these years, I've also
come to the conclusion that we just don't get anything done during the
summer, too much flying and BSing to do. Now that we're back into the
heart of building season, Dad's been laid up after knee replacement surgery
(thanks for asking Craig) so he hasn't been to the airport for the last 3 plus
weeks. Hopefully by the 1st of the year we'll really start making progress
again.

[rebel-builders] Contact with the factory

Post by Craig Walls » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:07 pm

Okay, this'll be my last thread on this subj; I know it's getting old.
Wayne, I'm guessing that if you have a web site for your plastics company it
probably doesn't invite customers to come and tour your factory-MAM's does
invite builders...specifically. I would never expect the pres of any
company to take time to speak with me. I happened to end up in the same
room with Darrell and Stephane and introduced myself to him. I might as
well have been the postman or some salesman.

I love my rebel and this build has opened my life to new things and new
friends and for me that's what makes life great. I don't wish ill of MAM or
its products and I think we all want to see the company not just survive but
flourish.

Regards,
Wayne

Wayne, there's a difference in complaining and stating facts. Another
fact
is that if you're in business, you act like it, whether you have 23 yrs in
or 50. Otherwise you don't stay in business. :)

Is it fair to assume that none of the "complainers" have attempted to run
a
manufacturing facility in the last 4 or 5 years in North America. Many
facilities have the lights dim.. if barely on at all. I know that our

I practically had to
force
myself on Darrell to get him to acknowledge my presence. That is not
customer service. That is customer no-service! Anyone willing to admit
it
can see the slow change and progress toward eventual close down. As a
builder with a long way to go I only hope I can get anything I need from
them before this happens.

I'm sorry Bob but from my experience they have been short staffed for
over
two years. Voice mail is not customer service. Pricing parts is a
no-brainer
in today's computer age. "THAT is the EXPLANATION. Perhaps there is no
justification for not being perfect, or even average ...." You hit it on
the
head here Bob, they're not even average - THEY SUCK.

And what I'm really getting tired of is that the only place you can get
any
information on the Company or "response" from the factory is right here
on
this builders list - not from them of course but from fellow builders -
and
I'm
guessing that Mike Davis isn't receiving financial support from Murphy so
that
we can communicate in this manner.

John Kramer

[rebel-builders] Contact with the factory

Post by John Kramer » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:07 pm

My situation has brought me to the realization that I need to sell my
kit. I don't have time to work on it anymore and haven't had for quite
a while. It has been a long hard time deciding but, I must sell Rebel
kit #369R, it includes float hard points, opera windows, skylights,
pitot tube, bungee gear w/fiberglass tail spring and gold Matco wheels,
lots of extra AN hardware including a full set of Wayne's single leg
nuts to make flaperon adjustment easy, also includes a full set (front &
rear) of Dave Fife's wingtips w/lights, original & updated manuals,
more. Tail feathers and flaperons completed by original builder, I've
assembled the wings with clecos over finished spars and ribs and started
assembly of fuselage with clecos. Plenty of pictures and log entries.
Nothing has been done that can't pretty easily be undone if you don't
like it. Complete kit no firewall forward.

I'll also include a deluxe 4'X16'workbench with lower shelf, full
casters and easy levelers. Can be disassembled with effort. I'll also
throw in lots of clecos. It will all pack up and move pretty easily in
a 18' trailer 14' without the bench.

It should be a good deal at $16,000 USD - LXT

I will continue to monitor the list as I've not enjoyed any other nearly
so much. I have learned an awful lot about how much I don't know. It
is a pleasure to read the mostly cordial conversation and get such a
quality education. Thanks to Wayne, Bob, Mike, and everyone else.
