[rebel-builders] Rebel Amphib Height/ Now cowl change

Post by Rebflyer » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:03 pm

Hi all,
I've been delaying this post but with all the cowl talk I have to mention
that Dave Fife has developed a fiberglass add on change for the bottom of the
speed cowl. It gives you the option of carrying the bottom of the cowl up
to 3" aft of the firewall and now actually cleans up the bottom of the cowl
along with a much larger exit.
We installed one on an 0-320 powered Rebel nearby who was really suffering
with oil temp problems and minor cylinder temp problems.
Part of the delay on the post was real numbers. Unfortunately Ren is not
real good with that. All I have gotten "it's better". I'll attach some pic's
in the next post. I plan on installing mine this winter so I should have
better #'s in the spring.

Ok,
Anyone that wants pic's drop me a line and I'll send them to your private
email.
I hate it when the computer messes with me.
I'll also send them to Fife, and he can also pass them on, I hope! :)

WALTER KLATT

[rebel-builders] Rebel Amphib Height/ Now cowl change

Post by WALTER KLATT » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:03 pm

I am not one to bash MAM, but with all the interations of that speed cowl they have made, you would think that by now they could build one with a proper exit, so we don't all have to go through this with every new cowl installation. I especially hate working with fibreglass, and while I've got this one right this time, it is still not a perfectly smooth factory finish.

And it is not good enough to test it on wheels and think that is fine. With my 320, I had it working good on wheels, but as soon as I went to floats, I had a big problem again. It has to be good enough so one can climb non-stop (no step climbing to cool off), with a fully loaded amphib from sea level to 10,000 feet on a +35 C day. Anything less is not adequate.

Bash away Walter. MAM has had many years to come up with a good cowl and
have never come up with anything that works well out of the box. More power
to Dave Fife for filling the void but if MAM were doing a proper job there
wouldn't be a market for his parts.

For my mission your cooling needs are excessive. Being in southern ontario
there's hardly ever a need to climb more than 5000' and if it's that hot
step climbing wouldn't be an issue for me. I don't know if my cowl would
meet your needs or not because I've never tested to that extreem. I do have
trouble keeping my oil warm enough in the winter time even with the cooler
completly blocked off.

Walter Klatt

[rebel-builders] Rebel Amphib Height/ Now cowl change

Post by Walter Klatt » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:03 pm

Yeah, the problem here is that our interior canyons are quite deep, like the
Okanagan and the Fraser Canyon. Just on the other side of the mountains from
my cabin at Harrison Lake is Lytton in the Fraser Canyon. It is the hottest
place in Canada in the summer, and +40 C is not uncommon there. In the
Okanagan, it is regularly in the upper 30s. So you if you can't climb fast
enough, you are forced to follow valleys.

I really appreciated the extra power of my 360 there a few times this past
summer. With my 320, I was stuck sometimes for 30 minutes or more trying to
out climb a downdraft until I got over to the lift side of a valley. No
problem this year with the 360.

I have flown with other planes a few times in these conditions, that had
inadequate cooling, and they had a real tough time. I would be up at 9000+
feet in nice cool conditions while they were still struggling at 5000 feet.

Once you get past 5 or 6000 feet, then you are usually home free, as the air
is a little cooler there, and you can keep your mixture rich enough to help
cool your cylinders, too. It's from 0 - 4000 feet that is the toughest to
climb through.

Walter

I'll go out on a limb here and state that one of the reasons MAM can't perfect
the speed cowl is because they don't have a Rebel at the factory to fly or
perfect. Hard to make improvements to your product if you don't have one.
I may be wrong, but I think the only demonstrator they have is the yellow
and black Moose and maybe the JDM-8 unless they sold it (or both).

Oh yeah, they have some project called a Yukon - I hope they have hired
Bob P to finish building it or we might never see it fly.
