New Rebel with spring gear

Yes!!! they are Bob and Greg Mansell at Leavens is still waiting to see
it/them!!! He is fully aware that it is <your> aircraft now, and stated
(again) just last Friday that he will take what ever measures are needed to
stand behind what Leavens sold me (and you!). If there is a problem with the
mag, it will be overhauled AGAIN or replaced with another one at no cost.
(This is quite good/amazing considering the engine was delivered 23 months
ago, so don't wait too long as who knows how long an employee is going to be
around!) They do want to do engine business with us homebuilders and
definitely want repeat customers. I only went to ATC this time because John
had an engine in house, ready to overhaul, where as Leavens had nothing in
stock (nor could Greg find a Conical core). The bonus is, now I will be able
to compare two shops workmanship and hopefully have two great sources of
engines!

Thanks Curt !!

I <WILL> do that - one day..... The mags are still under warranty
(I hope), so I'll just get it fixed for now, but I'm completely
convinced that the LightSpeed or LASAR systems would be an improvement.
I <might> chicken out a bit, and just switch ONE over - then I could have
the best of both worlds. I'd really like the extra power & economy
that the extra advance would give !

SO many things to do - so little time !! First project is to
get a set of Dave Fife's wing tips on, with landing lights in them.
Next is gear leg fairings, then a complete paint job, then Amphibs ....

Might be a while before I get to the electronic ignition ! ;-)

Looking forward to seeing you guys at the Rebel Builders
Meeting on Nov. 12th - hope the weather's good !!!

. Must be some country you fly in Alister!

Brian #328R
Very lovely country Brian! Most of the strips are very good, and some are
not!

My Rebel has just been away for three days with a friend, he did about 8 hrs
around Fiordland, he had a ball landing on beaches, river beaches and
riverbed strips etc. I had to admit I was quite envious. He struck a very
good patch of weather in between a lot of rubbish we have been getting.
which is the downside of living in a small island in the Southern Ocean!)

The old girl is holding up to it very well now and is going like a dream
although appears to be a little susceptible to carb icing, any one else
notice that with the standard 0-320 setup?)

I have to say I am really getting soft on the idea of the Super Rebel with
the M14 radial, that would have to be the ultimate Bush plane! I have flown
behind that motor in Yaks and they are a great motor, although I dont know
how my wrists would stand up to all that drilling again!!

And Bob, you are more than welcome to visit us down here and we will fit
some flying in. ( hope for good weather of course)

Cheers

Alister

Leavens Aviation have a loooong (over 60 years) history in the
aviation business here, and are just getting started in supplying
engines for homebuilders. They are VERY interested in preserving
their good reputation, so are really looking after this one !

Time/money .... we're still wrestling with that balance,
too, but are involved in a business partnership with some major
players that will give us a fair bit of both over the next 2 years !
(Ask us about it, if you're interested - there's room for more !)

Hope you get good weather - it's a long drive !! Either way,
we're looking forward to seeing everybody on the 12th of Nov. !!

New Rebel with spring gear

Post by Richard DeCiero » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:27 pm

Hello,
I am planning on using Electroair's (Jeff Rose) electronic ignition in my rebel. One of
the parameters that I like about the Electroair system is that it can be mounted on the
firewall side. I believe that the LSE unit recommends cockpit side mounting due to heat. I
have spoken with Jeff at length and he will flood you with the technical details.
Rick D.

The Electronic Ignition For Your Engine

Lycomings 4 & 6 Clyinder
Continentals 4 & 6 Clyinder
Auto Conversions 2, 4, 6 & 8 Clyinder
Tachometer & Navaid Autopilot

Electroair has been providing an Electronic Ignition for Experimental Aircraft for over 7
years. Electroair
Direct Ignition System is far superior to the ancient magneto. The Direct Ignition has
several advantages.
No mechanical parts to wear, no spark distribution losses, fires plugs directly from the
coils, high-energy
spark, longer spark duration, automatic timing adjustment for increase performance at
altitude. Benefits of
hotter sparks, cleaner plugs, less chance of fouling, better engine efficiency and high
resolution timing with
a 60 tooth timing wheel.

New Rebel with spring gear

Post by rebelair » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:27 pm

Hi Bob

I am aware that cooler air helps performance but the recent differences are
remarkable. I would love to get 120 KIAS continuous for some of my cross
country work. I noted that you said the Super Rebel gets 150 KT cruise. I
thought you would get 150 mph cruise in the SR.

I think that electronic ignition on one mag would be the next logical
progressive step to increase the performance of the Rebel. Do you know of
anyone using a constant speed prop. on the Rebel or do you think that is a
waste of time & money?

Have you decided on a paint shop?

Regards

Hi Brian !

The cooler air always helps ! :-) The denser air gives more
power, so we win 2 ways - more lift AND more power ! It is always
surprising just how much better things get with just a small drop in
temperature !!

120KT !! VERY impressive - I know just how addictive more
speed can be - I'm having a hard time adjusting to normal life after
seeing 150 KT (!!) cruise., in spots, with the Super Rebel (and a good
tailwind :-) ) !!!!

The new prop is 74 x 56, and I could turn 2,700 in climb, but
now only get about 2,500.... GOT to get that right mag off and back
to the shop !! Just haven't had ANY time to work on it - OR fly ...
Finally got out to wash & wax FINR today - looks MUCH better ! Now
I've just GOT to SELL it NOW !!!
(need paint and amphibs for the new one ... ;-) )

We really should swap rides one day - it would be very
interesting - I think we're very close in performance .... what
we really need is a separate set of calibrated instruments !
I guess we could compare GPS for cruise - I know I'm a LOT slower,
because I don't even have fairings on the gear legs yet !! That alone
costs about 10 mph ... I'm only cruising about 118 mph at 2,450 rpm.

Too bad the runways at Brampton are so narrow - we could take
off side-by-side ....

Anyway, I know we outperform ALMOST everything on the airport !!
(Chris can outclimb us - but then, that's a 300 HP. Pitts Special !!) :-)

Thanks for the clarification. I am not being sensitive about the gear so
to
speak. I do have concerns about the gear in rough operations. I don't
know how it will stand up. I am not doing our friend Alister is doing i.e.
flying in his conditions. I was too late to add some of the upgrades to
the
gear but I did add some reinforcement to the floor. I do agree with the
concept that the braking loads can be very high - probably much worse than
landing loads. I tend to go easy on the brakes after a saw a Rebel nose
over in front of me one day. Now there are probably 2 good reasons not to
overdo the braking on roll out.

I have been getting a lot of flying in recently. For some reason I have
noticed a considerably improvement in the way the Rebel flies in slightly
cooler weather. The climb is clearly improved which is normal, but for
some reason, I am now getting considerably higher top rpm. It is now not
than unusual to get 120 kias, (confirmed by GPS), on occasion. Wish I
could
cruise at this all the time. The fuel burn is probably ridiculous at this
speed but it is a bit of a rush. After the other gentleman indicated is
high rate of cruise on an 0240, I have my work cut out for me. Maybe a
constant speed prop would be good. BTW, do you know the diameter & pitch
of
the prop. on your new machine? We should compare performance notes to help
tune up each other!

I was just repeating Charles' question :

"How many people are actually having problems with this gear ?"

I think you've answered that - nobody ! (unless someone else
has a comment ....)

WOW ! You HAVE been flying a lot !!! 189 hours - plus today !!
That's GREAT !! Sure sounds like you're getting a LOT of enjoyment
out of your Rebel !! That's considerably less than a year, isn't it ?

And I thought <I> was doing well - just over 160 hours this year ...
Guess I'll just have to fly more next year !! ;-) :-) :-)
Would LOVE to go down & visit Alister - maybe Rebel Ramble 2006 ...

However, I do not fly into rough areas as Alister seems to encounter on a

Bob Patterson

New Rebel with spring gear

Post by Bob Patterson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:27 pm

Hi Brian !

The Super Rebel usually cruises at about 135 KT, but we had
good tailwinds going west last time !!

Electronic ignition, at least on one side, should help a bit,
because you can get a couple of extra degrees of advance for higher
power settings.... Never been a big fan of constant speed props -
they're high maintenance, high cost, and a lot of extra weight up
front. Probably too heavy for the Rebel, unless you found a composite
one. I <CAN> see a variable pitch prop, like the electric composite
models now appearing - but they're VERY pricey, too !! And reliability
is still a big question...

Constant speed props really ARE a necessity when you get up
to the size & speed of a Super Rebel - they really let you get the
best performance at both ends of the spectrum, and the weight isn't a
big issue with the Super ! And generally, if you can afford to feed
that O-540, cost isn't such a big deal, either ... ;-)

Still looking for a paint shop - a few ideas, but need to
get some details finished on the Rebel first.... Fife wing tips,
strobe & landing lights, gear fairings .... Sigh !! Haven't had
enough time to even FLY lately !! :-(

Should compare notes on paint shops - sounds like Hanover
might be a possibility ...

Off to Owen Sound on Sunday, for the RAA meeting at 1 pm -
might catch you at BFC...

Too bad the runways at Brampton are so narrow - we could take
off side-by-side ....

Anyway, I know we outperform ALMOST everything on the airport !!
(Chris can outclimb us - but then, that's a 300 HP. Pitts Special !!) :-)

Hi Bob

Best Regards

Thanks Brian !

Hi Bob

I cannot quite understand your question about spring gear. Can you please
rephrase. I have 189 hours now with zero problems with the spring gear.
However, I do not fly into rough areas as Alister seems to encounter on a
regular basis. Must be some country you fly in Alister!
