[rebel-builders] firewall reinforcement

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:56 pm

Ben... if you have my plates on the firewall I have seen no issue for the
need of the channel across between the mounts.......and have the totally
rode off Rebels to prove it (that still have perfect firewalls) LOL This
even includes CYP that has now been totalled for the third time, in 12
years, after a little trip thru a soya bean field on amphibs in July and
flipped onto it's back. I've been doing the firewall plates since 1996.

That picture you are referring to... the customer just wanted both.

Lower plate is more for prop strike protection than anything, but also helps
strengthen the lower corners/floor/witches hat connection from compression
aft in a hard landing. The top plates stop the forward tension pull and the
simultaneous compression pull between the top mount positions as the motor
tries to go down the only way it can do so is to pull the top two motor
mount arms together.

Hi all,
Can anyone --Wayne if you're listening -- provide info on "Wayne's bullet
proof" firewall? I see the picture in the Files/R-Fuselage section. So
it
looks like a large plate of 063 added to the whole bottom few inches of
the
firewall. Was this determined needed to help carry engine mount loads
with
float planes? Does anyone have any dimensions or other info wrt adding
this?

I also see the recommendation to make the channel between upper motor
mounts out of .040. (maybe that's also a float service bulletin).
Anything else on the firewall?

Thanks,
-Ben /496R

[rebel-builders] firewall reinforcement

Thanks Wayne!
I get it about the bottom 063 plate that looks like a stretched M across
the bottom of the firewall, picking up the witches hats. And, that the
channel across the two top motor mounts is fine at .032. But I'm not sure
what you mean by the "top plates" in your description here. Is that
referring to the same 032 or 040 channel between the top motor mounts?

"Top Plates" = my triangular .063 plates under each top engine mount that
tie into the witches hat. With them on there is no need for the channel
between mounts.
