What engine are you going with Charlie? (I think you're going 912 - which is
100+ pounds less - hanging out front - which I'm thankful for every time I
bounce the Rebel onto the strip)

The carry throughs are cut in 1/2 on my plane - 821 empty weight with the
912 - 100HP.and Scott 3200. The only thing that happens -IMHO - is that when
you mount the control column - you need to put a plate under it because the
control column mounting brackets only catch 1/2 of the carry through and not
both sides. (the floor only isn't enough to support the other side of the
bracket)
This has not been a problem and I did end up moving the control columns rear
word by - I think an 1"(I can't remember - I just know I wrestled with the
decision) - again - no issues for me. It actually gave me more stick
clearance from the panel.

IMO you won't be giving up any strength because the rivets holding the
carrythrough together aren't as strong as half an FUS 5. I think the only
reason not to cut it is if using the spring gear.

Hi all
Came in from the shop minutes ago.I was going to ask the list about
weather
or not to split the FUS 5.Lo and behold someone was asking the same
question.
I am using an 0-320 should I be leaving them square?

Unless I've badly missed something, MAM is clear on Fus-5, 4, etc
construction, and splitting Fus-5 has only to do with whether one is
installing spring or conventional (bungee or die-spring) gear. I think Bob
mentioned that most are no longer bothering to split Fus-5, for time
savings or lack of band saw, whatever, but not for structural reasons. I
heard this after I split mine, sold the extra one, and I'm still aiming
toward an 0-320. There's even a special small chapter devoted to 0320
planning, and it has nothing to do with Fus-5.

One other note on Fus-5 is just the reminder that if you are splitting, and
using conventional gear, and option for float installation, to use a
floating nut plate (5/16") for the gear wishbone bolts (Fig 12.9.9).

Thanks to all who re-plied to my gear carry through questions. Because I am
certifying at 1320 Lbs. and installing the bungee/die spring gear I think I
will split the tube and save the 4.2 Lbs. Good to hear I also will not be
sacrificing any structural strength in the gear mount.

Hi Jason I'm using an 0-320 as well. I've had no problems from splitting my
FUS 5 and expect I never will.
