Thanks Keith.

FWIW, I asked Jeff about using some 2024 when I had ruined some piece
(can't remember....it was many ruins ago) and he said he'd approve it but
didn't reccomend it mostly due to the dissimilar metals and corrosion
potential. I'm thinking lots of chromate and careful installation. Craig

Thanks Craig. That seems to be the consensus for sure.

2024T3 Alclad is approximetly 30% stronger then 6061T6.
Because the alloys used to make 2024 is susceptible to corrosion and
needs to be protected. Alclad is a thin layer of pure aluminum applied
to each side of the sheet to help inhibit corrosion. By the way all the
charts for strength and bend radius etc take this into consideration.

Pure Aluminum does not corrode, impurities do. 1100 series aluminum is
used to plate the 2024 sheet metal. In most cases it is about 5% (on
each side) of the total thickness of the sheet of alum. The factory
edges of the sheet are not protected, as well as any cuts nicks and
scratches you make.

The standard protection and easiest is to apply a (zinc) chromate
primer. Of course the environmentalists know what our needs are better
than the engineers of the past did, and it is a very to find primer with
chromates in them now days. However some sales persons will say that
their replacements are just as good.

Chemical conversion coating such as Alodine 1201 (high electrical) or
1500, which has a low electrical resistance, might be a suitable as
protection for most alloys. The chemicals force the alum. to oxidize
and protect the metals.

I hope this is helpful and does not "muddy" the waters!

Yes I am using some 2024 along with the 6061 on my Moose---with
protection.

Most production airplanes are constructed with 2024; many of the home
built planes use 6061.

I just noticed that the skins and the FUS33 corner wraps of the Rebel
tailcone are 2024T3, so I guess mixing the materials isn't an issue, if
proper corrosion protection is considered.
