[rebel-builders] Planning ahead for Amphibs

Post by Bob Patterson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:51 pm

Hi Dave !

Probably not worth worrying about .... The installation is
pretty straight forward, and usually done on completed Rebels.

Depending on your projected timing, though - might be good
to get an order in for those amphibs. Could be a long wait -
only a few in the pipeline at the moment ...

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I would recommend installing the extra doublers at the rear float points
same as the Elite. These are not part of the Rebel kit, but it is a known
weak area. Go to figure 9.16.3 in the Elite fuselage manual.
http://www.murphyair.com/murphyair/Airc ... 1_Fuse.pdf

Also, you might want to decide ahead of time how you want to mount your
pump, and ensure that you have the proper channels on the floor to support
it.

Lines and cables can wait until you get the floats.

[rebel-builders] Planning ahead for Amphibs

Hi Dave

I had the float kit so looked at this fairly carefully. I'm pleased that
I put the two 1" x 1" angles along the top of the floor that the pump
mounts on. I used longer pieces than what were in the kit for this and I
was able to tie them into some sub floor channels. The aft end of them
is handy for tying down luggage and they frame in (protect?) the
elevator cables and seat belt anchors a bit.

I was going to put a hard oil line from the reservoir to the pump under
the floor as well but decided there were better solutions such as
mounting the reservoir right on the pump.

I put brackets on the floor for a water rudder lever instead of the pull
cable. Might be a good idea to put primer on the inside of the tail
feathers. That heavy channel that is often recommended below the
instrument panel for mounting the throttle is also handy if you decide
to mount the selector and gauge there. Oh and if using conventional gear
you might want to make the top of the bungee strut X frames removeable.
Nutplates if you can fit them in or I put an access in the bottom skin
behind the cross tubes.

I assume you've seen the "floatfix" bulletin which is important
regardless of whether floats will be used.

Hi Dave I think that you should definately beef up the rear attach points
and I'd add a triangular doubler to the floor just in front of the main
carrythrough on each side where the hydraulic lines will exit. It's
impossible to know where the rudder fairleads will land untill you install
the cables. I used nutserts instead of rivets to hold the fairleads on as I
change back to wheels every fall.
