[rebel-builders] RV Crash

Post by Jim Cole » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:47 pm

Hi John, I read the same article and I am planning on contacting the
"reporter" - what a lot of crap and very unprofessional.

The reason I mention this is because of a quote in the local newspaper from

"Right now , we are trying to determine if it was a pilot problem or a
technical problem. There are dozens of factors to consider in determining a

I would call this the quote of the day - Everyone who builds a "homebuilt"
knows very well that the safety factor in these kits takes into account the
fact that it is a homebuilt and that's probably the reason why there are so
many )(&%$& rivets!!!!!! Also when building one keeps thinking about flying
it and wants to know it's safe because your life and that of others depends on
it.
I guess it is important to note how some of these people think about the kit
a/c.
My two cents for the day.

[rebel-builders] RV Crash

Hi Jim, don't know about newspaper coverage on this but last night "A
Channel" did a great job of covering it with a really good interview with an
aviation knowledgable eye-witness and lots of film footage.
Heard a fairly accurate version on CBC Radio this morning.
I think newspapers get some inkling of an idea about a story then just make
up whatever fictionary tale they think they can get away with as long as it
sounds good and sells. At least thats been my experience..........Angus

You're right Angus. I didn't see any of the other coverage - but the
newspaper had a large picture on the front page and the inaccurate write up.

"WITH THESE HOMEBUILT MODELS, EVEN PUTTING THE WRONG SIZE OF SCREW IN CAN
CREATE A PROBLEM WITH WIND CLEARANCE."
As a point to clarify...it seems from reading the original post that this
was a quote from the Transportation Safety Board employee - Rae Simpson. If that
is the case, the issue may be worse then a reporter with limited knowledge
about homebuilt kits. It sounds more like an employee of TSB not being very in
tune with homebuilding reality.

Of course, we NEVER have that problem south of the border with FAA employees.

(Sarcasm intended.)

I'm sure the TSB member will say he was misquoted.
I also attend the TSB safety meeting in Toronto - the next one being in
September so I will be sure to ask.
