[rebel-builders] overhead headset jacks

Post by Bob Patterson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:38 pm

Hi Ron !

FWIW, I'd prefer them more foreward, just behind
the seats. On the ceiling is definitely the best place !
This keeps them clear of baggage loading, and out of your
way up front. And you can reach them easily if one
gets shaken loose ...

[rebel-builders] overhead headset jacks

Hi Ron, I agree with Bob, mine are between the seats - just behind my
shoulder so I can reach if necessary. I have two hooks also attached to the
roof centre rib behind the jacks to hook the head sets on when not in use -
they're quite handy - not only to hang the sets on but to run the extra
cable on while wearing the head set. It keeps them out of the way.

Cheers
Jim

Good points, Bob. So you're suggesting just forward of the torque tube? I
hadn't thought of that, probably due to lack of a cross cabin bulkhead for
support there, but I guess with an adequate doubler and triangle stiffening
gussets to the ceiling rib, that may not be a problem.

Hi Ron I put my jacks just behind the torque tube and it would probably be
better just in front. I can't easily reach the jacks in flight but I've
only wanted to once or twice. I ran my headset cables over the torque tube
and hold them clear with a couple peices of velcro. I put hooks on the next
bulkhead back and most of the time the headsets are out of the way for
loading baggage. When loading bicycles I just move them to the opposite seat.

Actually, a long way forward of the torque tube - seem to recall
a cross bulkhead overhead ... or maybe one was added... an extention
of the flap handle support rib, or added to the side of it ?? ...

Put them forward of the torque tube! Then you run your headset cords up and
over them from behind and plug them in. Works as a stain reliever and gets
them behind your shoulders so you don't get tangled in them.. yet leaves the
jacks above your head.

Hi Ron
Behind the torque tube seemed like a well protected spot but I find that
I do unplug the headsets to protect them during loading and unloading.
The wire connections at the headset plugs generally won't take much
abuse and neither will earseals if loading ladders, luggage, etc. Truth
is that I usually unplug the headsets anyway as I don't like to leave
them in the sun or in obvious sight when parked. It sounds like more
guys prefer the jacks forward of the torque tube but it doesn't seem
like it would matter much either way to me.

I vote for cordless headsets powered by RF energy ;)

Ken

Amen. For those with sufficient bucks and panel space, the new Lightspeed
Zulu headset and PS Engineering *PMA9000EX* audio panel both support
Bluetooth. As far as I know, they're the only combo that will do this at the
moment.

Thanks to all for the comments and suggestions. Forward of the torque tube
they will be.

Ron
