Yikes, and I thought fuel was expensive here in Alaska!

To make this work in my non-metric mind, I converted everything to gallons
and US dollars... here's what I came up with...

Current price at Fairbanks for a gallon of 100LL (3.785412 liters) is
US$5.40 out of the truck, or US$5.00 from the self serve pump. As a member
of the Civil Air Patrol I can buy it at our hanger for US$4.50.

Looks like John is paying US$6.11 a gallon down under, and Peter is paying
US$11.98 a gallon in the UK!

I can get unleaded automotive fuel for US$3.48 a gallon, but unfortunately
all automotive fuel in Fairbanks has Ethanol added, which is a big no no for
use in airplanes.

Hard to believe only 18 months ago I was paying US$2.36 a gallon. ;-(

Last I heard it was it $4.10/gl. here. But I haven't been to the airport in a while so I would guess its higher.
That Rotax is starting to look more appealing everyday. Will fuel prices going through the roof I wonder what it will do to the prices of our planes? Not much selling right now.

Hello Peter
I live near St.Louis Missouri in the USA. I had just sent these prices to
John Gleeso a few days ago so they should be current. It appears the price
increase are world wide and I don't think it's going to get any better.
Our fuel prices are very volatile, it depends on what day and some times
what time of the day you check prices. Right now auto low lead is$3.23/Gal.
Diesel is $4.00/Gal. and Av. fuel at the smaller airports is about $4.45/
Gal. At the larger feeder airports it $5.63/Gal. I am glad my 65 HP Luscombe
only burns 4 Gal/Hr. I can use auto fuel and so far I have been able to buy
it without thanol.

For last weeks trip from Toronto to Florida, I noticed
100LL ranging from US$4.19/gal to at least $5.50
Pumping your own was as much as a dollar cheaper than truck service.
Premium mogas averaged about US$3.55 /gal

West of Toronto (Canada) premium mogas is running equivalent to
US$4.85/gal. All numbers based on the US gallon so multiply by 1.2 for
Imperial gallons or divide by 3.78 for liters.

Washington Court House OH said he could no longer get mogas without
alcohol. Another operator suggested it was in fact available to him as
long as he purchased premium. Not all airport mogas is premium but it
really should be for many engines if you work the octane numbers.

Note that lobbyists with EAA's assistance have 6 states (including WI,
WA, MT, ID, HI) that apparently mandate no alcohol in Premium mogas for
compatibility with older engines, farm engines, boats, etc.
http://www.eaa.org/autofuel/faqs/ethanol_blends.pdf
I've purchased premium in several additional states without alcohol even
though the pump said up to 10%, or was not labeled, or had local average
alcohol content requirements. Several states and provinces do not have
any requirement to mark the pumps at all. Premium seems less likely to
have alcohol in it, compared to regular grade, in North America. I guess
my point is - test it - many more places have alcohol free premium than
people think. Better for most engines and also for the environment.

As for jet fuel and diesel, the movement to tax fuel based on carbon and
energy content is what makes it more expensive than gasoline in many
areas. It is almost always still cheaper than gas per BTU though.

At the fuel co-op I bought into I can still get 100LL for $1.14 a litre
it's actually cheaper than the $1.15 - $1.20 for regular car gas around
here. (southwestern Ontario) I think all the other nearby airports are over
$1.40 now. Deisel is in the $1.25 - $1.30 range.

I'm in a similar boat as Drew... I till have about 1700 litres of 100LL in
my tank, that I paid $1.13/litre for. Should get me thru the summer and then
some.

Car gas hit $1.20/litre here today for regular.

Just got some 100LL avgas today at Langley, and paid 1.64 per litre. Looks
like it is going to be an expensive summer.

Started up my new engine for the first time, and everything seems to be
working, except my digital electronic tach. It is now fed from the EI, so
something obviously not right with the wiring. Will try to figure it out
tomorrow. My EI, though, has a display with an analog signal tach, so at
worst could fly just with that.

Walter
Surely you'll be going so fast now that you'll get there in no time and
actually save gas ;)
OK maybe not so much.
Sounds like you are about ready to try it.

Ah.... the pleasures of living in the land of taxes, New York State.

I topped of the Beech today at Brockport's Ledgedale Airport (7G0).

Brockport usually has the lowest cost 100LL around the Rochester, NY area.

Today's price was 4.69 per gallon. That's up a dollar over last spring.

Two weeks ago, I saw 100LL at Cannadaigua (D38) for 5.65 per gallon.

And filling up the car hurts almost as much with regular going about 3.55 a
gallon.

Yep. It's going to be an expensive summer!
