I had 3/8" bolts on mine and and that was a recommended upgrade since I
understand the 5/16" ones were bending. Bobp will likely chime in with
more details but there should be discussion in the archives as well. It
was also recommended to make about 1" diameter aluminum or delrin
spacers on those bolts so that the bungees rode on the spacers instead
of directly on the bolts.

A longer safety cable sounds like a good idea to cater to more places
where the aluminum tube could fail. However if my memory is good, it may
not be wise as it seems to me that making it go all the way to the
bottom bolt would cause the cable to hang out in the breeze below the
bolt in normal use when the bungees are not extended. Some of us used an
external 3/16" cable that goes from top most bolt to the bottom most
bolt to protect against a failure of any part of the bungee strut or the
bungees.

Hi Jean !

Here I am, chiming in !! :-)

The Delrin spacers slide over the bolts, filling the space
between the tube and the penny washers, so the washers
squeeze them - this effectively increases the diameter of the
bolt to about 1", preventing bending. The bungees can slide
easily over the Delrin, so they work better, too.

The latest setup for the cable is just to go around the
bungee bolts, to stop the tube from coming out, even if
the whole bungee were to break. I had the earlier setup,
with a cable that ran the full length of the tube - apparently
there were some problems with kinking & wear of the cable,
so they went to the shorter loop..... Personally, I like
tying both ends - so, I guess the external "Alaska" cable,
connecting the top gear bolts & the bottom bolts, is my
preferred solution, although even the small center cable ring
is better than nothing....

I just got home from Florida, and the LSA show - lots
of interesting stuff !

Jean

You should be able to find suppliers/distributors of plastic in the Yellow
Pages, there should be a number of listings. I know of GE Polymer Shapes and
Laird Plastics as national chains, both should be on the web too.

BTW, Delrin is a trade name for Acetal type of plastic, kind of like Xerox is
for photocopiers.

Cheers,

Dave
