I'd like to know how I can tell which direction the grain runs in the
6061 we are using on the Rebel. I think I can see it, but is there a
well defined way? Perhaps the printing goes along with the grain?

Your question aroused my curiosity because I knew I had heard the answer
in the metal working seminar at Oshkosh. But not trusting my memory, I
looked for the answer in Tony Bingelis' book, Sportplane Construction
Techniques. On page 38 there is an illustration that states, "METAL
IDENTIFICATION CODE RUNS WITH THE GRAIN."
A couple of messages back that was a discussion on grain and whether
there is an effect on the strength of aluminum. On page 104 of Custom
Built Sport Aircraft Handbook there is an article by Chris Heintz on
Wood, Aluminum, Steel and Composites ... and the Properties of each. In
the article he states, "Due to the manufacturing process for aluminum we
get a unidirectional material quite a bite stronger in the lengthwise
direction that across."

YES Scott, the grain runs in the direction the sheet is fabricated and the
ink markings are rolled on as it comes out. So the ink markings run in the
same direction as the grain. This is quite important when bending brackets.
etc., especially in 2024, where all bends should be across the grain. Thick
(.063 or so and up) 2024T3 material will snap if bent along the grain and
thinner sheets can crack immediately or slowly over time.(think about how
you split wood with the grain and how the axe bounces off against the grain)
With 6061T6 the same (bends across the grain) should be done were possible,
although not as critical as 2024 is, as 6061 can be bent with about a 1/2 to
1/3 the "radius" as 2024 can be. SO if you keep your bend radius' as large
as possible, you shouldn't have to worry about grain direction too much.
Your main wing spars are a good example of this as they are bent with the
grain. A large enough radius guarantees no cracking and contrary to previous
opinions, aluminum is stronger in one direction running with the grain, when
used as a beam (the spar). The loads on the spar are transfered nicely when
the grain runs root to tip along the spar. If the grain was perpendicular to
the spar span, it would give the spar lots of nice places to SNAP along the
grain lines, just like splitting that firewood!
One other reason to watch the grain is for appearance if leaving the
aircraft bare and just polishing it. If you put sheets on in various
directions, the aluminum will look different colours due to the reflection
variances.
