[rebel-builders] LED landing/taxi lights

Post by Bob Patterson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:21 pm

Hi Ben !

I've seen these at a couple of shows - was un-impressed.
They don't seem to be as bright as I'd like, and are wildly
expensive ! I'm sure the price will fall - they've already
dropped a few hundred ...

Several guys here have had great luck with the $5 halogen
automotive lights - Dave Fife supplies these with his tips...

I DO like the new LED nav/strobe light combos from
Kunzelman and Aeroflash ... low power consumption,
cool running, bright light, and should last forever !!
Think Kunzelman also have a landing light coming ...
(also a name change ??)

Bob,
I looked at the video of the landing light/recognition light from aeroleds and they seemed pretty cool. I looked at the web sites of the two you mentioned and I guess I was confused. Were y'all talking landing lights? Cause I see no landing lights offered by either Kunzelman or Aeroflash?
I looked on Aircraft Spruce and Chief.
But what do I know. I am just tryin to "shoot myself in the foot".

[rebel-builders] LED landing/taxi lights

Post by Bob Patterson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:21 pm

Hi Eddie !

Guess they look good in the video - I've seen the real thing
at OSH & Sun 'n Fun .... not excited -- especially at THAT price !
They have reduced the price by a few hundred already ...

I DID say I liked the LED NAV/STROBE combos from Kunzelman
& Aeroflash - also from GS-Air :

https://ssl.perfora.net/gs-air.com/sess ... shopscript

I picked up the tidbit that Kunzelman 'might' be working on
an LED landing light at their booth last year .... it 'might' appear
one day soon .... I'm sure somebody will, for a better price....

I also said I like the HALOGEN LANDING LIGHTS that Dave Fife
supplies with his wing tips - they are AUTOMOTIVE lights,
at a cost of about $5 each .... Several builders in Ontario have
used these lights in the tips, and other places...

For a few dollars more, Dave supplies an alternating flasher
so you can alternate flashes from each wing tip ... greatly increases
visibility - again, for a whole lot less than aeroSUN.

But if you like them, and have the bucks to burn,
go for it !!

...... and <I> didn't say anything about your feet !

[rebel-builders] LED landing/taxi lights

Post by Eddie Moran » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:21 pm

Bob,
My feet are fine. I was refering to a post that said I was "Shooting myself in the Feet" by refering to my (for sale) Moose as professionally built.
I have $3 to burn. ( found it on my son's bedroom floor).
Hell, I think the $5 light bulbs are the way to go too.
I did not build my Moose but I think Doug or Brian told me that they had ran wires all the way to the wing tips via a tube. I have nav/strobe light out there so I guess I could tap into those wires for the landing lights.
For those of your that think it is wierd to have "non builders" (like me) here on this site........
When you want to sell your Moose/Rebel/Renegade, you will want the buyer to have a place to go to "talk shop". They will want to tap into your knowledge base. They might want to install a ................. Or buy a...................

Ron Shannon

[rebel-builders] LED landing/taxi lights

Post by Ron Shannon » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:21 pm

Ben,

I got a pair of the AeroSUN 800's for Xmas, to install into my Fife
tips. I've also had a pair of the GS-Air LED NAV/strobes waiting on the
shelf for quite awhile, though neither of these is on the "essential to
get it flying" task list at this point. Lower current load, smaller feed
wire, longer life & reliability are the motivating factors, of course.
Will let you know how it all turns out.

[rebel-builders] LED landing/taxi lights

Post by Bob Patterson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:21 pm

Hi Eddie !

If you have, or get, LED nav/strobe lights, they are so much lower
draw that there might be enough juice left over for halogen landing lights
on the same wires. Those fellows likely used a substantial wire size ...

There are a lot of 'non-builders' here .... or 'partial builders' ....
it doesn't matter ! The only important thing is ending up with
a SAFE airplane !! Everybody is happy to help !

TWO of our 4 Rebels were built by the factory, so I certainly
have no problem with that. Now, with all the Quick Builds coming,
for all models, there will be less 'scratch building' - but it really
doesn't matter in Canada --- but, as Wayne said, it MIGHT become
a problem in the USA. Everyone knows that many folks in the US have
been contract building for years - and they go on the warpath
every few years about it, pressured by the FBO's & AME's, and
now by Cessna .... All Wayne was saying was "Be careful
out there !" ;-)

[rebel-builders] LED landing/taxi lights

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:21 pm

Its alright Bob... I guess some just don't appreciate people looking out for
their well being.....or believe just how far my "fingers" go inside the
goings on, behind closed doors, at Transport Canada and their recent
dealings with the FAA.

I can cut that "relay" off at any point I choose!

[rebel-builders] LED landing/taxi lights

Post by bransom » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:21 pm

I had looked only partially at aeroled.com, and when seeing the price was
kind of wondering why the guys at my field were talking them up so much.
Glad for the note that other stuff such as HID is closer to my definition
of cheap. ;)

As for whether to be on the list or not depending on who built what -- I
don't think that was anybody's point. Feedback and Murphy hangar talk is
all that's needed.
