[rebel-builders] Rebel: Question on Fin Parts

Post by Bob Patterson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:11 pm

Hi Craig !

WOW !! Yes, those are creased WAY too deeply !!
Are these the originals, or did the previous builder re-make
them ??? (i.e. - did they have a plastic coating ....)
Not much you can do now, anyway, but now you know
what to look out for ! :-(

Too bad it was sooooo long ago - these would definitely
have been replaced if they shipped that way !! Should
have been caught on the first inventory ....

Might be a good time to run through the rest of the
skins - maybe you'll need more for other areas ....

Only consolation is - you can re-use the aluminum for
miscellaneous doublers .... like those semi-circles under
the ends of the elevators .... (see Files ...)

Hi all,

As you might have read, I have been having some trouble putting the fin
together. I just posted three photos of the skins in the archives under
Rebel Rudder. One builder who saw the pictures suggested that possibly the
creases in the skins were way big and would make it difficult to position
the ribs accurately. They are so deep that it's very difficult to flatten
them out. Anyone have an opinion one way or the other? My rudder and
elevator skins have a much less pronounced crease.

Also, both my skins are now totally drilled out to #30. Is that going to
make it hard to get all the parts and pieces right when I build the fin
again? I'll be starting with all new spars, ribs, etc. I can get new ones
but they are $144 ea.

Thanks, Craig

[rebel-builders] Rebel: Question on Fin Parts

Post by Craig Walls » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:11 pm

Okay, so now I maybe won't feel too badly for screwing up twice on these!
I'm confident that the previous owner didn't mess with the skins. Although
he had placed the kit contents in two different boxes, he was totally anal
about everything. All the pieces are in the original brown paper and
labeled. And yes, the skins still had the clear plastic on them. I guess
I'll order new ones :( Maybe I should just go get that cub I was looking
at!

[rebel-builders] Rebel: Question on Fin Parts

Post by Ken » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:11 pm

If they are that bad, I'd consider hammering out most of the creases and
use it as a template to drill #40 new skins on a sheet of 6061-T6.
Cheaper, and you will find uses for extra 0.020 aluminum. It is not
difficult to make creases in small parts like the fin skins.

I'd probably also ask MAM what they think. If you've already purchased
extra parts caused by this, they might replace the skins. One never knows.
