[rebel-builders] Dynalfocal mount installation

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:11 pm

Walter... yes I have some - 4 taper pins. I'd mail them out to you
tomorrow.. BUT the issue is they bottom on the 7/16 diameter of the lord
mounts hole JUST as they come out the other side...so aren't gonna help you
line up the case holes. I'd suggest getting the bottom bolts in and then
using a large "Gray" or similar taper punch. I tried one in the shop...think
it was a G30...and it would work perfect.

Well, I'm glad to hear that I am not the only one that had to resort to
extra means (like the tapered pins) to install these dynafocal mounts.
Now
I have to figure out how to evenly grind a bolt down to a tapered tip. I
don't want uneven edges to gouge the hole on the engine. Or is it
possible
to buy a tapered 7/16 pin, and just cut it down to the right length?

Walter,
I helped my brother change the rubber bushings on his Grumman a couple
years ago. He had the tapered pins. We got good at
it by the 4th hole and
just a modest amount of cussin. I recall getting some of
the pins or bolts
in, bottom ones first I think, then lifting the engine so that
it tilted
back from the bottom mounts and pressed into the top
bushings. I winced a
bit when lifting brought the front wheel off the ground, but of
course that
was really not too big a deal. Just need to move
things around with a bit
of fine tuning on the amount of lift till the next hole lines
up. Probably
way easier with an assistant.

[rebel-builders] Dynalfocal mount installation

Post by Walter Klatt » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:11 pm

Thanks for the offer Wayne, but at worst I can make my own. I would only
need one, as I would do it one hole at a time.

I don't know what you mean, though, about bottoming out on the lord mount
part. They have an inner bushing as well, so it should be 7/16 all the way
through. The pins can only be at max 1 inch long, so they can come out the
other side, but I would cut them to that length.

the taper pins I have start about 5/16" dia and over their length, in the
same width of the complete lord mount, they become 7/16 so they can't go any
further in... as they get larger beyond that! Like I said... a long tapered
punch will be your friend! Go hit a home hardware.

OK, I've got my tapered pin. Went out to the garage, cut a bolt to size, 15
minutes of grinding and it was done. I even impressed myself with how evenly
tapered it was all the way around. Looks like it could make a nice bullet
too.

The angles on the engine tabs are different - they supposedly
focus on the center of the engine, reducing vibration more.

I was thinking of asking the same question, as our gliding
club got one of those. It was a real pain, meant re-welding the
engine mount and adding adapters, which pushed the engine
forward another couple of inches !! I definitely wouldn't
want one of those, given the hassle involved !

[rebel-builders] Dynalfocal mount installation

Post by Walter Klatt » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:11 pm

Well I got my engine installed to the motor mount today. Don't think I could
have done it without the tapered pin, and it still took a fair amount of
persuasion. Even after installation with all mounts fully compressed and
tightened, some of the rubbers are a little stretched to one side. So am
starting to think that maybe this mount was not perfectly aligned.

I checked my engine thrust line and it is within 1 degree (very slightly
pointing up) of my door sill and floor bottom. So if that is where the
thrust line is supposed to be, I should be OK.

OK, I see what you mean, in that the diameter gets larger than 7/16 at some
point. Yes, I will look around here to see what I can find. Thanks.

the taper pins I have start about 5/16" dia and over their length, in the
same width of the complete lord mount, they become 7/16 so they can't go any

further in... as they get larger beyond that! Like I said... a long tapered
punch will be your friend! Go hit a home hardware.

Walter... yes I have some - 4 taper pins. I'd mail them out to you
tomorrow.. BUT the issue is they bottom on the 7/16 diameter of the lord
mounts hole JUST as they come out the other side...so aren't gonna help
you
line up the case holes. I'd suggest getting the bottom bolts in and then
using a large "Gray" or similar taper punch. I tried one in the
shop...think

it was a G30...and it would work perfect.

Walter... I'll go see what I have in the hangar. Have a few trays of
taper
pins.
