[rebel-builders] Dynalfocal mount installation
I have no idea Walter. I think they have different angles but what they are, you'll have to research a bit further. I thought u purchased a new engine? They shud be able to tell u what to look for if it's a reman.

The angles on the engine tabs are different - they supposedly
focus on the center of the engine, reducing vibration more.
I was thinking of asking the same question, as our gliding
club got one of those. It was a real pain, meant re-welding the
engine mount and adding adapters, which pushed the engine
forward another couple of inches !! I definitely wouldn't
want one of those, given the hassle involved !

Hi Walter
You didn't by chance get one of the rare #2 type dynafocal engines trying
ot fit it to a type 1 mount? Just a thought!......

The type 1 intercepts the crankshaft at 30* and the type 2 at 18*. Ran a search and it seems that the type two is more common with the 0-320's. U shud be able to see if the angle is different by 12*.

I am quite sure I have the type 1 as that is what was ordered on the engine,
and I didn't notice the angle to be different when I was trying to fit them.
My problem was that after getting two holes to fit, I couldn't get the
others to go.
I think I may make myself a tapered pin that was mentioned and use it to
find the hole and tap the bolt in behind it.

[rebel-builders] Dynalfocal mount installation
I ran into that problem on My SR-3500, the O-540- engine has the
removable lugs bolted to the engine case. Murphy steel mounts for that
series of engine uses the 30* angle. The rubbers fit onto the engine
lugs, and the whole assembly (eng & Lord rubber mounts) slides back to
the steel Murphy mount, and the bolts slip in easily. The 30* aims all
4 lugs to about the center of a 6 cylinder engine, between # 3, & # 4
cyls. The 18* mount aims at the crankshaft flange on a 6 cylinder
engine.
As I remember. On the O-320, O-360 the rubbers straddle the ears on the
steel mount, and bolts up to the fixed lugs on the engine--- is any of
that clear?? I'm not sure what I just said is what I thought I was
saying. Perhaps a picture would help us know what is causing your
hardship. Can you send us one of your mount and eng lugs?

FWIW, with my Jabiru, I put the mount on the engine first. To get the mount
on the engine, I first had to make one end of a large "G" clamp "skinny" by
knocking the head off the screw end. That headless end was then used to hold
a socket inside the mount, which in turn held the bolt tight inside the
mount, i.e., forward. The other end of the clamp goes on the front side
mount washer, pulling the rubbers together enough to get a nut on the
forward end of the bolt. I may have some pictures. Let me know if you'd like
them.
Don't know whether this technique might apply to your situation, but it
might give you an idea.

[rebel-builders] Dynalfocal mount installation
Walter: I have an IO-320 with a type #2 mount, most,
but not all, were IO series engines. the best way to tell
the difference is if the ears on your engine are machined
out flat then it is a type #1 mount. The ears on a type
#2 engine are bored out on an 18 degree angle, the depth
of the hole is aproximetly 1/4 inch.
All dynalfocal engine mount holes are pointed at an imaginary
focal point inside the engine, weather it be 18 , or 30 degrees.

[rebel-builders] Dynalfocal mount installation
Walter,
I helped my brother change the rubber bushings on his Grumman a couple
years ago. He had the tapered pins. We got good at it by the 4th hole and
just a modest amount of cussin. I recall getting some of the pins or bolts
in, bottom ones first I think, then lifting the engine so that it tilted
back from the bottom mounts and pressed into the top bushings. I winced a
bit when lifting brought the front wheel off the ground, but of course that
was really not too big a deal. Just need to move things around with a bit
of fine tuning on the amount of lift till the next hole lines up. Probably
way easier with an assistant.

I think I may make myself a tapered pin that was mentioned and use it to
find the hole and tap the bolt in behind it.

[rebel-builders] Dynalfocal mount installation
Well, I'm glad to hear that I am not the only one that had to resort to extra means (like the tapered pins) to install these dynafocal mounts. Now I have to figure out how to evenly grind a bolt down to a tapered tip. I don't want uneven edges to gouge the hole on the engine. Or is it possible to buy a tapered 7/16 pin, and just cut it down to the right length?
