[rebel-builders] Is MAM still in business?

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:11 pm

I'd suggest issues with record rainfall shorting junction boxes before I
took that avenue !

When I called MAM to check on the delivery schedule of my fuselage
kit, I got a message that their phone is out of service. I take that
as a bad sign. When a company goes out of business, the usual way a
customer finds out is when he calls to check on delivery of
merchandise and finds that the phone has been disconnected.

I'll second that Wayne,, they have just updated the website with special
pricing on MOOSE kits. So I would think they are fully in operation.. Dale

They were doing inventory today Roger as I talked to several folks there.
They are fully operational--maybe it was a phone company problem...

Post by Walter Klatt » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:11 pm

Yeah, we had cold and snow on the weekend, and then today it rained and
warmed up to +15C, so it all melted at once.

Now that the Cdn dollar dropped back down below the greenback, it should
help their business. Sure glad I bought my engine when I did...

[rebel-builders] Is MAM still in business?

Post by Roger Cole » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:11 pm

MAM called today to say that they are soggy from the rain and have
been busy shoveling snow off the roofs to prevent collapse. They are
very much alive and will send the fuselage kit when they are assured
that their buildings are safe.

I admit that I am a bit gun-shy about the stability of the kit
manufacturer. Since I don't have room to store the complete kit, I
have to buy it in sub-kits. Did you know that MAM is one of only 6
kit manufacturers who have been in business continuously under the
same management for more than 20 years? Before I sent my first check
to MAM in 2000 I was within a week of sending a check to Stoddard-
Hamilton for a Glasair. Then I read in a magazine that Stoddard-
Hamilton had gone bankrupt. So far, I haven't regretted buying from
Murphy, but the final proof will be when it flies.

[rebel-builders] Is MAM still in business?

Post by bransom » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:11 pm

It is the worry of any kit builder. And MAM's staying power is admirable.
One of the items I felt was a big plus when I decided to go Murphy was
that they do a lot of general sheet metal fabrication. I don't know how
much that is still true, but diversification matters.

PS: How do you make a small fortune in the aviation business?
.....start with a large one. ;-)

Roger
I would not worry about MAM. I estimate that Daryl would attempt to
offer partial kits to you even if he had to close the doors for some
reason. I judge him to be an honorable person. Also there are a
significant number of unfinished kits and parts from partially bent and
partially built Rebels available. And there is nothing you can't
manufacture yourself if you had to. Your airplane will fly if you want
it to.

I'm sure you're right, in general, but I was thinking about this awhile back
-- when I had redo a strut. MAM was out of inventory and couldn't get more
for a few months. The custom strut extrusion would not be easy to replicate,
though you could probably substitute a different sort of strut from some
other design. In any case, I've considered stocking an extra. Not that I'd
ever bend one or anything, but....

Now don't let them large streamline wing lift struts/float spreaders worry
anyone. Got tired of being shut down on doing Clamar float installs because
of supply hicups on material. Die joint purchased and extruded in Toronto
for us, Clamar and CAN-ZAC. I also have a bunch of the smaller mounting
"vertical" strut material here as well if someone needs for their float
install on a Rebel/Elite.

I was just there today to pick up my exhaust and some bolts, and can assure
you that I saw no signs of them going out of business.
