[rebel-builders] Need to Vent!

Craig,

I feel your pain!! There will be days that you are glad you are several thousand miles away from MAM. It's those days that you feel that if the guy that wrote the manual was there, you might be knocking th snot out of him! JK On those days its best just to walk away for a bit, calm down, and do something else for awhile.

except for the leading edge skin but didn't rivet it because it wouldn't lie
flat. I decided I was pulling it up or out of shape with the skin so I
remade the ribs and spars (save the skins!).

Today I had it pretty flat and riveted one skin on but the other side was a
#%#@!! and the second set of L E skin holes didn't match up and actually,
skin didn't perfectly match the ribs and spars either. Looks like I'll be
paying MAM a visit for some parts/pieces.

I'm using lots of clecos, working carefully, etc. It's quite a job getting
the edges to match up with all of those creases in the skin. There must be
some trick to building ribs and spars accurately when they don't even lie
flat on the skin!

The worst of it is that I read ahead and I know there's pretty much more of
the same thing in the rest of the control surfaces section!

If you have no hints or suggestions, a sympathetic moment of silence will
do. Lol craig R207

Craig,
You do have BOTH skins clecoed on before doing any riveting right?

[rebel-builders] Need to Vent!

Post by snowyrvr@mtaonline.net » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:10 pm

Hi Jesse,
Do you mean have one side clecoed while I'm riveting the other? If so,
then no. I fitted one skin, flipped it over on some supports (with clecos
in place) and then fit the other side. When I assembled them I just did
one side at a time.

Something doesn't sound right. If you have repeated troubles restarting
with the same skins perhaps there is something wrong with the skins. It has
been many years since I built mine but I remember the control surface
construction as being very cookbook with no fitting problems. I just
followed the manual step by step assuming it would lead to the finished
product. (Don't do that for the wings and fuselage. That's where the
manual starts deteriorating.) I do completely agree with Jesse about having
the entire assembly clecoed before setting any rivets.

Craig, That may be the problem. I remember having the whole thing clecoed before any riveting.
