Thanks Sean, Clear to me waht the problem is.
I have noted my carb heat control is making metal
,ready to fail no doubt. How do I get more air in
there
without a major mod?

John,

Just measured the Bracket BA-4106 filter ... 5" x 5.5" or 27.5 sq.in. But
this isn't the sq in of exposed filter ... its the outside dimensions of the
filter which includes the metal frame. The dimensions for the exposed
filter at the front are 3.75" x 4.25" or only 15.9 sq. in. ... a tad bit
short of the 27 sq. in. Sean mentions as the min required. Wonder if 612e
needs a filter "mod" also. Looking forward to doing the mentioned run-up
test with and again without the filter.

John - don't know what 612e weighs. A lot of work's been done since it last
flew ... to include the amphib hydraulics. I'll be weighing it soon ...
will let you know.

[rebel-builders] EliteProp&airfilter

Post by Walter Klatt » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:00 pm

You mention Van's air filters. Does Van's sell a carb heat box for the 360
that would fit the Murphy cowl and what would the part number be? I have
their catalogue, but couldn't find that item.

Also I am thinking of taking the lazy route and buying Van's baffles, too.
The ones for the RV 6, 7, et al are part number BAF-6-360. Are these the
right ones?

Also, where is the best place to get a good stainless steel exhaust for the
360? I assume it is probably the same as for the 320?

[rebel-builders] EliteProp&airfilter

Post by kitplane_solutions » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:00 pm

There is no simple way to do this. The Vans filter can be made to fit with
only minor work of the lower cowl carb inlet. I did one on Johns Elite a
couple of months ago and it takes about 20 hours to assemble the airbox
mount it and mod the cowl. I might add Murphy does not build their air box
but it does not work well or last. The proof that it is the filter that beats up
the carb heat door bushings is that the one I reworked has close to 300 hour
and no wear. Just pull the element out and go fly you will notice your
performance go uo and the engine will be much smoother

[rebel-builders] EliteProp&airfilter

Hi John ! (and Walter ...) ;-)

Ralph Baker has aready been through this whole exercise
with his Elite - emails are in the archives. You can search
by SENDER ...and... KEYWORD in the BODY ...

He used the Vans airbox & baffles (it's a big round filter !)
and a Vans 'snorkel' fitting glassed onto the bottom front of the
'speed cowl' - a very nice looking installation. He wanted
foolproof alternate air, which the Vans setup gives -
by a spring-loaded door .... plus the large paper filter.

Ralph must be travelling, or he'd have chimed in -
maybe we can get him to post a few pics to the FILES section ...

BTW Walter - Pierre used the molded fiberglass plenum for his
XP - it ducts ALL of the air in and down through the cylinders.
Absolutely NO cooling problems ! Only disadvantage is -
you have to take it off to get at the spark plugs ...
Of course, he did have a great 4 door metal cowling with
a large exit chute at the bottom.... (and the Thorp T-18
nosebowl - $80 from Aircraft Spruce ...)

[rebel-builders] EliteProp&airfilter

Post by Walter Klatt » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:00 pm

Yeah, I will have to go through all that cowl and cooling stuff one more
time. I know you guys out east like the metal cowls. Despite the pain to get
the fiberglass one off and on, I still prefer the looks.

I think you get better cooling too on the metal cowls because your inlets
are bigger. If you recall, that is what finally fixed mine, and I didn't
have to change them much either. But that resulted in 50 degrees cooler.

But in any case, where do you get this fiberglass plenum? Will it fit the
speed cowl?

I did find the part number for the carb heat box. Van's calls it an airbox,
which is why I missed it initially.

I will also be installing a new radio. Any recommendations? I want one that
has a high power transmit, and will not give me any grief with noise, either
antenna RF or from the electrics. I am pretty happy with the rest of my
instruments. With my new LS EI, I will also have a display that shows the
engine map and timing advance, which should be interesting. It even has the
option of a knob to adjust your timing advance, but I don't think I will
push my luck with that one.

Another question for the XP360. Is the carb offset to the pilot side, and is
there a special speed cowl option from Murphy for this? My engine is an A4M.

Walter

Hi Walter

The Vans airbox for the 360 carb or up draft fuel injection will work. It needs
a little trim and a bit of glass work but will fit the Murphy cowl I've done
three of them now and they seem to hang together just fine. I also use Vans
tThrottle bracket and spinners they are really nice and are a very good price
also. I joke that all of the planes that I build have a Van-Murphy fire wall
forward package

[rebel-builders] EliteProp&airfilter

Post by kitplane_solutions » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:00 pm

If you use the Vans baffles and cut the bottom of your inlets open another
1"this adds about 13 square inchs to your inlet area you will cool just fine
Look under Elite cowl section there are some pictures of the bigger inlet. You
don't need the internal plenum just good baffles save the weight

[rebel-builders] EliteProp&airfilter

Post by Walter Klatt » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:00 pm

Do the Vans spinners come all cut out and holes drilled for prop bolts? My
last one I did from scratch with the Murphy kit, and it was a lot of work. I
was happy with the final result, but like I said, I am getting real lazy now
the second time around, and just want to get it back in the air ASAP.

Hi Walter

The Vans airbox for the 360 carb or up draft fuel injection will work. It
needs
a little trim and a bit of glass work but will fit the Murphy cowl I've done

three of them now and they seem to hang together just fine. I also use Vans
tThrottle bracket and spinners they are really nice and are a very good
price
also. I joke that all of the planes that I build have a Van-Murphy fire wall

forward package

The vans bulkheads are prepunched for the prop bolts but you need to put
the dome attach scerws in this is easy beause you can see right through the
fiberglass spinner to drill the holes

[rebel-builders] EliteProp&airfilter

Post by Bob Patterson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:00 pm

The Thorp T-18 nosebowl looks pretty sharp - if you check my pic in
the archives, you can see the openings are actually smaller -- but it
works fine - did for the XP-360 too !

Think he got the plenum from Superior ... or the engine tune-up spot -
Vans might have them too ....

The Vans airbox that Ralph used was big, fiberglass, and almost round,
as it contained the round filter ... the scoop for the cowl came from Vans
too.

For radio - maybe the new ICOM panel mount might be worth a
try - much larger display, built-in intercom, and can monitor 2 freqs
at once ... (IC A-210 ???)

Can't help on the offset cowl - you'll have to get that info from
the engine shop -- and MAM ... Doubt they'll be happy with
the XP-360 .... ;-)

Will your old mounts fit ??? If not - better order NOW --
delivery might be a while !!! :-(

Like Sean says, use the Vans air intake system, throttle bracket, baffles
and spinner, and increase the intake area either by lowering the bottoms or
raising the tops of the air intakes. I think I've documented all of this in
the archives too. I tried to get away without enlarging the intakes, but
when I had my engine failure at 4 hours, I took advantage of the enforced
pause to fix this, and the engine runs nice and cool now, even without the
baffles behind the spinner area. Glad I didn't finish the cowl until after
I'd test flown the airplane.

Hi Walter I used Van's baffles with my new engine and I thought I got very
good value from them. It still took a long time to instal them though.
Isn't an 0-360 wider than a 320? I thought the exhaust was different.

All Elite kits have been delivered with an airbox that fits an 360 carb but
the
airfilter is to small. I can't remeber the name of the person that I spoke
to at
Bracket but I was told that an 0-360 needs a minimum of 27 square inchs of
filter surface. If the supplied airbox is used it will fail in about 25
hours of
use this is do to the carb heat door vibrating from the engine trying to
draw
air from the back side of the door. The first Elite I built for Bob Fry had
the
standard filter and ran like crap at full power while belching black smoke.
Pulling the filter resulted in almost 200 RPM increase at full throttle. I
modified the box for a larger filter (not easy) now I just put Vans air
filters
on and get it over with. Bob's plane is running a 76-56 prop and pulled 2460
static at an OAT of about 90 this past summer. Bob cruises at 103 kts. at
2480. This is an XP-360 with one Lightspeed. And it is still for sale take
advantage of the Canuck Buck and buy it today

[rebel-builders] EliteProp&airfilter

Post by Eric Fogelin » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:00 pm

Hello Walter.

I am in the midst of installing the XP-360 on my Elite. I have done the
initial Vans BAF-6-360 baffles fitting. They are great. Minor trimming with
a dremel to fit around the valve cover gaskets. All predrilled holes lined
up perfectly. Some minor trimming around rear engine castings. The baffles
are oversized compared to the speed cowl so you will be trimming these down
significantly. Vans provides everything in the baffle kit: hardware, clear
instructions, flexible baffle seal, fabric rivets, all screws, washers and
bolts (all the correct length). You only need to provide the rivets to rivet
the baffles together.

Ordering from Vans is a breath of fresh air. Order one day via internet,
quick auto confirmation, ship ground, and the order arrives 2 or 3 days
later (ok, it helps I'm only one state away).

that would fit the Murphy cowl and what would the part number be? I have
their catalogue, but couldn't find that item.

Subject: [rebel-builders] EliteProp&airfilter
