[rebel-builders] Paint air system

Post by Rich Dodson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 3:57 pm

Ted,

Ralph makes some good points here. I highly recommend going to the PPG website and downloading the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for all the products you intend to use. These are nearly always free online, since the companies want the info in your hands.

The MSDS contains a section that is man-readable and talks about the level of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required.

Most poly paint systems are very toxic to the body. As stated below, the best way to do business when in doubt is a forced air respirator with a full face piece. Have you checked out any fellow builders in local EAA Chapters? They might have one sitting around. Also, you might want to investigate an industrial rental company as a source.

A full hood TYVEK suit and gloves are absolutely required as well.

Good luck with the painting!
Rich

Ted,
The following is my understanding of the reason for fresh air supply:

If the PPG Concept paint is a polyurethane then you are playing Russian roulette without a fresh air mask such as the Hobby Air. Those give off a compound that not every one is sensitive to but many can be sensitized to over time. (Similar to an allergy) Filter masks are not effective and the only sure fix is positive pressure air from a source area not contaminated by the paint. From what I understand, if you get the black ball someone else gets to finish your plane. Can I suggest you contact both a knowlegeable supplier of Concept and also a painter familiar with the safety aspects of polyurethane paint application.

On the other hand if it is an enamel then a respirator with properly rated cartridges will be ok.

Personally, as someone who has had a bought of bronchitis in the past I will do what it takes to safeguard my lungs. Now back to the dust mask and the lawn mower. :(:(

[rebel-builders] Paint air system

Post by Ted Waltman » Sun Feb 19, 2012 3:57 pm

No question that I'm going to use a proper (forced) air supply and full face
mask. I'm simply looking for suggestions (if there are any available) on
less expensive options or alternative sources. The vendor that gave me the
paint quote said their forced air system & mask runs something like $1,200.

Maybe I'll have my wife paint the plane <grin>...
