[rebel-builders] ANR Headsets

Post by Keith Leitch » Sun Feb 19, 2012 3:56 pm

I have been very happy with my Lightspeed headsets. I have a 20 3G and a 15xl ? The cheaper model is just as good as the 20-3G. I would have liked to try out the new Zulu when I was at Oshkosh but the crowd around the display booth was a constant mess.
I had tried nearly every headset on display from the various manufacturers and felt the Lightspeed was the best dollar value.

Does anyone have a suggestion on ANR headsets? I have an old Lightspeed and need to buy two or three more. If someone has a headset they like maybe you could let me know. Also the type of engine you have might be important. I have a M14.

Thanks,
Eddie

Drew,

That brings up a point I meant to ask. Do you think that I need ANR when the longest legs I will fly are about 2 hours? I have never actually flown the Moose with the "ANR" turned on.

I just flew about 3 hours with the doors off and just the passive portion of the Lightspeed 25"s on. I did not feel it was too loud.....

Thanks,

The Lightspeeds seem to keep coming to the top of the list. There is a couple of sellers on Ebay.com that sell "Lightspeed" built headsets for about 35% off the new price, with the warranty.

One thing that I was looking for was a review from someone with a M14 engine. That engine roars, and with the doors off it really roars.

By the way, regarding the flying with the doors off. It is very very cool. I have taken two people flying with em off............both pilots...............they loved it....although........when they flew............sitting in the right seat...........they always turned left..............

FWIW - I have the Lightspeed and love it. My only problem is that I
sometimes forget to turn it on. Then when I remember, I spend the rest of
the flight wondering why I endured the noise before remembering???? There's
quite a difference. Guess I need to put it on my check list.

Lightspeed has repaired it twice - my abuse - (at no charge) and given me
replacement pads whenever I have asked. I'm really a Lightspeed fan.

[rebel-builders] ANR Headsets

Post by Eddie Moran » Sun Feb 19, 2012 3:56 pm

Having flown single seat fighters with NO checklists................I too think I need one now.

I have flown twice with the intake drains open and the ANR turned off..............oh well.

A little checklist story.....................................

I flew a flight with the Bombardier test engine and Alton K Marsh (an editor) of AOPA magazine a couple of years ago. I flew the Moose for an hour on formation on a Cessna 140 with Alton in the right seat. I worked my butt off in 100 degree heat and 80 percent humidity. Alton was the pure gentelman......................not.

It was pure BS. He gave me NO respect. After the hour flight I was ready to throw him out.........................And he had the gall to ask me why I did not do the landing checklist.

I told him that the gear was down and the flaps were up where I wanted them and he could get out if he wanted. That was at about 400 feet.....

Lets just say the article reflected the fact that I did not bow to his BS. I did not get on my knees to the AOPA staff....

So, two things, checklists keep you from forgetting things and editors of good magazines can be stupid.

I can't answer that directly Eddie but I can tell you I'm a health and
safety rep at work. The industry standard for hearing protection is you
need to reduce the sound pressure to below 85db over an 8 hour period to
prevent hearing damage. If you can borrow a sound meter and fly with it
then you can find out how loud your plane is and how much protection you need.

I forgot to add that there's also a 5db rule that says for every 5db
increase in sound exposure time should be reduced by half. So the noise
limit for a 2 hour flight would be 95db.

[rebel-builders] ANR Headsets

Post by NormIsler » Sun Feb 19, 2012 3:56 pm

Eddie-

I read everyone else's input, and just wanted to weigh in with my two cents
worth.

Last year at Sun n Fun, my "mission" was to buy a set of ANR headphones. I
must have tried on each pair available. More then twice! After everyone kept
showing me the new Bose and David Clark X-11 saying how great they were, I
realized I did not really care for either. What bothered me most was that they
were both so dependent on ANR circuitry, neither had very good passive noise
sealing capability. At least that ruled out the $800- $1000 headsets!

That brought me to the Lightspeed 30-3gs (I think that is the right model
#.) I liked them, but the feel wasn't right. They are wider then most other
headsets, and although they have a light clamping force, I feel like my head is
bumping into walls on both sides.

Finally, someone showed me the David Clark H10-13X and H10-13XL. Both have
GREAT passive noise reduction (they actually seal the noise out) and with the
ANR turned on make it almost "whisper quiet" in my Beech. I opted for the
H10-13XL because they offer the option to use a 9 volt battery in line, or plug
into a panel mount module I plan to include in my Elite.

The specs mentioned in all the reviews are important, but in the end, how
they feel on your head is the biggest concern. By the way, my Clarks priced out
about the same as the Lightspeed.

Good luck in selecting the one that SOUNDS right, and FEELS right.

[rebel-builders] ANR Headsets

Post by Richard Wampach » Sun Feb 19, 2012 3:56 pm

Eddie; My mission at Oshkosh this year was to get ideas for my Moose,
meet up with some of the Murphy builders and to buy 4 headsets.

I think that I spent at least 2 days of my 8 their looking, listening,
trying, talking, and all that stuff till I was totally confused as to
which ones to buy. As a flight instructor I have probably flown with
every type available on the market, and a few home made ones.

In the end I chose Bose--4 of them, the authorized discount was 15% on
all the ones you buy after the first pair at a list price of $995. Last
year at AOPA in Palm Springs, a similar deal was offered at 20% off, I
should have done it then! But the cash flow was a bit tight then. I was
able to get the avionics shop that I dealt with to throw in 4 (9 volt)
battery pack adaptors from Pilot pn ---89, this adapts the round 8 pin
single plug from Bose and splits to two standard Mic & (stereo)Phone
plugs common in most aircraft panels. By the way the only source for
the 8 pin round adapters M or F is from Bose that is Pilots source also.

I had enough money left over to buy 6 beautiful Cessna Citation Surplus
cow hides from B & B out of Kansas City, and a lot of hardware. I took a
month off back in May from the Moose project to do a 550 conversion in a
Bonanza. I now think that it was a good deal for me.

Some times it's worth a little extra to pamper yourself and fly the very
best!

Hi,

Does anyone have a suggestion on ANR headsets? I have an old
Lightspeed and need to buy two or three more. If someone has a headset
they like maybe you could let me know. Also the type of engine you have
might be important. I have a M14.

Thanks,
Eddie
