[rebel-builders] engine for sale

Hi guys I finally bit the bullet and ordered a brand new ECI 0-320 clone
for my rebel. So now I have my old 0-290D for sale. It's a good engine for
a rebel on wheels but not quite enough climb on floats to get out of our
little lake comfortably. It's still installed in my plane till the middle
of next month so you can come hear it run and fly behind it before
deciding
if it's what you want. I'll sell it with or without the 70" warp drive
prop
and spinner asking $5500 canadian for everything.

[rebel-builders] engine for sale

Post by Drew Dalgleish » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:39 am

Hi Wayne I've had no problems with my warp drive either but I went for the
160hp option plus Emag Pmag electronic ignition so that should be good for
a few more horsies. If it doesn't sell with the engine I'll give it a try
first but from all the good reports here I imagine that a prince prop
should work fine.

Drew Dalgleish

[rebel-builders] engine for sale

Post by Drew Dalgleish » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:39 am

I sure will our cottage is on little McKellar lake about 20km east of Parry
Sound so I'm probably less than an hour from your place. On a related note
would you consider changing from an 0-290 to an 0-320 to be a major
modification? The mount and the cowl won't change. I'm going to call TC
anyway but it's good to know if I have a valid argument or not.

Sounds good! Don't forget if you're out "adventuring" this summer to drop in

Wayne G. O'Shea

[rebel-builders] engine for sale

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:39 am

Not so much that it's a major mod...the problem is that the engine model is
listed on the C of A so you have to apply for a new C of A ( the first thing
I check on purchases as I know of MANY Rebels in Canada that are flying
illegally with a C of A listing an O-235 or O-290 when indeed they are
flying behind an O-320). Technically you are grounded until a new C of A is
in your hands...but that said I've changed motors, done a new equipment
list/ Weight and balance etc and had it in the mail with a cover letter
stating right on it I was flying off 10 hours passenger free voluntarily and
could you please issue me a new C of A for the engine change.

Contact Wayne Juniper or Jeff Langford before too much more time goes by.
Find out exactly how they want it done paperwork wise so you're not left
grounded. Lots of ways for them to do it for you. They can issue you a
flight test permit with a 6 month validity period on it and that would allow
you lots of time to change the engine, do climb test etc and get it into
them and then the wait for the new C of A to come back to you.

We have just such a permit for the Elite we are mounting to 2200 CLAMAR
amphibs next week. Late in the fall the owner got a test flight permit at a
new weight, that I won't post here, that gave us 6 months to get our $#(%*@
together, get it assembled and flying ....do a climb test at the new
gross...submit the paperwork and fly legally until the new C of A arrives.

Cheers,
Wayne

Hello Bill & Bob,
If my maths are correct the 2.2lt Egenfellner output is only equivalent to, or slighly less then a Lyco 0-235.

Kind regards,

Probably correct since Egenfellner used a 1.8:1 ratio automobile
transfer case psru which is a bit low. The engine is about 135 hp stock
if you wind it up to about 5400 rpm. Eggenfellner hasn't sold a 2.2 for
many years though as far as I know. Think he has concentrated on the 2.5
and now the 3.0 six cylinder I hear. $4k seems low for a converted
engine in good shape.

Hi Greg !

Having flown O-235 Rebels (a lot ...) and a few Rebels with a 2.2 Subaru,
I would say the Subaru is a far stronger, smoother engine, and better with
fuel, as well. Just my subjective opinion - based on better climb & cruise
experiences.

This is not surprising, given that the stock O-235 is 100 hp, and the
stock 2.2 Subaru is 135 hp.....

Not that I'm a big fan of Egenfellners - largely because of the
re-drive...

[rebel-builders] Engine for sale

ONLY a 360 Walter?? I thought by now you'd be lusting for an 0-390 or 400
after all they're the same weight and surely those high mountain lakes must
make it tempting. ;o

the time has come. I have already picked out my new Lycoming clone engine
complete with roller tappets and electronic ignition, and am ready to place

That means that I will be putting my current 0320 engine up for sale. It has
about 470 hours since overhaul and is working very well. And those that know
my plane and have flown with me, also know that it is a strong engine and
performs very well. It is the conical mount 150 hp version with Bendix mags
and lightweight SkyTec starter. Baffles go with it, too, and might even
include the cowl if I need a new one for the 0360.

I will also be selling my prop, either separately or with the engine. It is
a 74 X 54 metal Sensenich and is very well matched for this engine and the
Rebel on floats. Should work well on wheels, too, if you're looking for
rocket like performance. And now that I think about it, won't be needing my
3 blade 72 inch Warp prop anymore either. It is ground adjustable and worked
very well on wheels with this engine.

So if you are looking for a low time, running engine with a known history
and/or a prop, let's make a deal. I will sell it for whatever I can get, and
am open to offers. If you are within range of Vancouver BC, and I still have
it on the plane, I can take you up for a ride, too. But the early worm gets

Send me a private email if you are interested, and we can talk.

Walter Klatt

[rebel-builders] Engine for sale

Post by Walter Klatt » Sun Feb 19, 2012 3:56 pm

You know I haven't ruled that out yet... ;>) The 390/400 are about 50 pounds
more as I understand it. But heck, saw Dick's Rebel in Arlington this summer
with the 210 hp 6 cylinder 0360 Cont. Don't think that is any heavier than
the 390/400's. He did have a pretty big battery way back there in the tail,
though.

The other option is a "stroker" 360 (sort of like the ECI 340) for about 200
hp, but same weight and dimensions as the parallel valve 360. But it
requires a special crankshaft, and would definitely be a one-of.

However, don't want to lose my tail either...

Will have to review again your dealings with TC and the engine change. Would
prefer to just send them a letter after the fact telling them of the change,
and giving them a new weight and balance, and with new climb tests.

[rebel-builders] Engine for sale

Post by Drew Dalgleish » Sun Feb 19, 2012 3:56 pm

OK I thought all the parallel valve engines were more or less the same
weight. I'm sure whatever you choose will work. At Oshkosh several years
ago I saw a subaru powered rebel that was over 1100lbs. enpty on wheels. If
you can deal with Wayne Juniper at TC from out west go for it. My mistake
was asking the London TC office for advice they started a file on my plane
right away and I was married to them for the duration of the engine swap.

ONLY a 360 Walter?? I thought by now you'd be lusting for an 0-390 or 400
after all they're the same weight and surely those high mountain lakes must
make it tempting. ;o

That means that I will be putting my current 0320 engine up for sale. It

about 470 hours since overhaul and is working very well. And those that

my plane and have flown with me, also know that it is a strong engine and

include the cowl if I need a new one for the 0360.

It is ground adjustable and
worked
very well on wheels with this engine.

So if you are looking for a low time, running engine with a known history

and
am open to offers. If you are within range of Vancouver BC, and I still
have
it on the plane, I can take you up for a ride, too. But the early worm gets

No, the 390/400 are the angle valve versions which are heavier.

My mistake
was asking the London TC office for advice they started a file on my plane
right away and I was married to them for the duration of the engine swap.

summer
with the 210 hp 6 cylinder 0360 Cont. Don't think that is any heavier than
the 390/400's. He did have a pretty big battery way back there in the tail,
though.

The other option is a "stroker" 360 (sort of like the ECI 340) for about
200
hp, but same weight and dimensions as the parallel valve 360. But it
requires a special crankshaft, and would definitely be a one-of.

However, don't want to lose my tail either...

Will have to review again your dealings with TC and the engine change.
Would
prefer to just send them a letter after the fact telling them of the
change,
and giving them a new weight and balance, and with new climb tests.

[rebel-builders] Engine for sale

Post by Walter Klatt » Sun Feb 19, 2012 3:56 pm

Had a good look at the XP400 engine, and if I had an Elite floatplane, this
would be the engine I would be going for. It is only 25 pounds more than the
XP360, but gives you 220 hp. You can get a high compression version all the
way up to 250 hp, which might be good for a Yukon or Super Rebel.

I would put it in my Rebel too, if I knew it wouldn't tear off my tail.
