Interesting that there were (2) two accidents on the same day at the same airport. Bad fuel maybe?

[rebel-builders] Moose Accident

Post by Ted Waltman » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:20 pm

AFAIK, no facts about the accident have been released. No one knows whether
it was engine trouble, a fuel issue, weather, pilot error or just plain bad
luck. It would be nice if the pilot involved were willing to post to the
list and enlighten us on the real facts (I don't know if the pilot is even a
subscriber to the list).

Ted,

For the good of the community we need to stay abreast of what happened on this and other accidents.

Does anyone know the final results of Doug Beechel's accident? I would imagine that the final might not be done yet.

We all know that things can happen. We just need to know exactly what caused the accidents.

My Moose has a M-14B and I want to know if there is somethng going on with the M-14.

I want to know if there is a xxx or yyy problem etc.

[rebel-builders] Moose Accident

Post by Ted Waltman » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:20 pm

I wholeheartedly agree with you Eddie. I too want to know about the root
cause of incidents and accidents, whether minor or major. Heck, I even
would very much appreciate hearing what folks find on a walk-around or
annual condition inspection that prevents an accident.

I was merely trying to say that in the case of this recent accident, the
only person that really can tell us what happened is the pilot. Anything
else is idle speculation until the official report comes out.

I want folks to learn from my mistakes. I want to improve my plane based on
what other folks have learned. As this summer's accident in Washington due
to the rudder pedal lock-up shows, there are accidents that result from
items that never make it to a service bulletin. As an example, I've already
taken steps to insure I don't have the same rudder pedal issue in the
future.

Hence, when someone learns the specific facts about the Calgary accident, I
hope we all can share in that data that helps us all improve both our planes
and our piloting skills.

[rebel-builders] Moose Accident

Post by Eddie Moran » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:20 pm

Chris,

Not me.

If you study the history and reliability of the M14P you will see that it is really "bullet proof".

It is (a little known point) the most widely produced aircraft engine ever. It is used in all the Soviet trainers, the Chinese trainers and many other countries. There are currently two factories in Russia building the engines and others providing aftermarket parts.

It is also used in the Soviet aerobatic teams aircraft. The engine runs upside down, under heavy G loads and with rapid throttle movements.

I have heard of NO engine failures that resulted in aircraft losses. I have heard of a some cylinder failures with uneventful landings.

Here are some links to M-14 sites.

http://www.gesoco.com/engines/m14p_series.html

http://www.jimkimballenterprises.com/h_ ... moose.html

http://www.m-14p.com/v2/index.html

So in summary, everyone is very pleased with the engine........

And as an owner of two of them, I know what is needed is education.

[rebel-builders] Moose Accident

Post by Eddie Moran » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:20 pm

Ted,

There are two reasons that we need to know what happened in the Moose accidents.

Of which there have been three recently.

First and foremost is to prevent it from happening again. I am flying my Moose with my M14B in ten hours. Still getting to know her but I am really happy. Getting ready to do the Young Eagles thing again.....

Secondly, and not nearly as important as the first................................. is to maintain the value of my airplane.

I have a Murphy Super Rebel with a M-14 Russian radial engine. That should be all I have to say.

The uneducated will just have to be educated.

And being a Marine pilot I know that anyone can be educated........LOL.

No! I think that usually when an engine losses power on takeoff it's not
the fault of the engine but a fuel delivery or quality problem. We need to
find out the details but there will always be occasional engine failures
regardless of the manufacturer. I'd happily fly behind an M14 if I could
afford the fuel burn. Does anyone know if George Coy is still working on
the 5 cylinder version of this engine?

I read in a journal "somewhere - a while back" ....

that there are MORE M14's in the world -

Than ALL the "other" aircraft engines combined !

Chris,

Once again, the Murphy construction saves the pilots !!

Interesting that there were (2) two accidents on the same day at the
same
airport. Bad fuel maybe?
