[rebel-builders] Rotech R2800 Rebel performance?

Post by Rick Harper » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:20 pm

G'day Ben .....

I think you'd find that the Rotec 110 HP (due to it's geared output) would turn a MUCH bigger prop / pitch than a 912S would !
(there is no substitute for cubic inches .... and the Rotec is 2 & 1/2 times bigger than the 912 !) ... and yes, I know the 912 is geared too ....

Many "down here" say that the 110HP Rotec " pulls like a 140 HP" !

Wild guess - I reckon the 912 would probably have a hard time getting to 2000 RPM FLAT OUT - with a 76 X 55 prop' !

Hope this helps !

Some of the prop, horsepower, tip speed discussion has made me wonder --
does anyone know what the performance of a Rotech Rebel turned out like?
The R-2800 does 110HP at 2400rpm prop rpm (geared from 3600 rpm crank), on
a 76x55 prop. I'm curious how it would compare to a 912S Rebel.

[rebel-builders] Rotech R2800 Rebel performance?

Thanks Biggus...
In some of the past engine related posts I've stated that I felt there was
a hole in engines available between the 912S and the 0320. And now I'm
starting to think it may in fact be there in the Rotech. Yes, the low rpm,
big torque, big prop all translate to more thrust than one might expect
from 110hp. (Rotech's info page says to expect more than a 130hp 0-290).
Weight's reasonable too. Radial "cool" factor. It's starting to get under
my skin even tho I always thought I'd go for tried and true Lyc or Lyc
clone. Am I nuts?

When I bought my clone 320 the 150hp rotec was just newly available. As
much as I was intrigued by the cool factor and the chance to have something
different I had to consider the fact that the parts for the engine are only
available from a single source and that small companies like rotec have a
very small chance of still being in bussinness 10 years from now. Also
you'll be on your own engineering the firewall forward and fabricating the
cowling. The other thing to remember is it probably won't help the resale
value of your plane untill there's a lot of experience with the engine.

[rebel-builders] Rotech R2800 Rebel performance?

G'day again Ben !

Here's the e-mail of a guys who's just finishing off his Rebel - with the 110 HP Rotec in it ...

His name is Rod ... and his e-mail is rodandrea4@bigpond.com.au

(He WAS the Murphy agent for OZ .... but that all fell apart :o(

I've also seen an Ozzie built plane - called a "Hornet" - with the Rotec in it ... (up close it seems to have a lot of Rebelish parts in it .... as well as the Zodiac brand as well !)

Go to Google & type in < hornet aircraft rotec > and it should come up !!!

Have fun !

Biggus

PS : NO - you are NOT crazy ! :o)

[rebel-builders] Rotech R2800 Rebel performance?

I wonder if the Murphy Renegade cowl could be made to work? Might be a
place to start.
