[rebel-builders] Rebel Gross Weight

Post by Bob Patterson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:20 pm

Hi Mike !

I don't think there's any requirement to show load limits in
an operating manual - there are many custom homebuilts without
stress analysis, and there for no idea of limits. I think the inspection
mandate relates only to "proper materials & construction methods",
so you could just leave the limits out of the manual, or put in what
you think they are now ....

There are several Rebels registered at 2,000 lb. -- the IMPORTANT
number is the weight you actually submit when you do your
CLIMB TEST --- THAT's the weight you will get !

Just in case Drew hasn't mentioned it, there are inexpensive
spacer inserts available for the Silver Matco wheels, directly
from Matco !! Anyone who has Silver Matcos should have these -
so the tires fit properly - apparently only about $80 ... Especially
desireable for the fat (DICO or Carlyle) tires !

In Canada, I am applying for a gross weight on wheels of 1,800 pounds.
This weight would reduce the ultimate load factors from + 5.7 and - 3.8,
to + 5.2 and - 3.5 respectively. MAM also states that the maneuvering load
factor at 1,650 is + 3.8. My understanding is that + 3.8 is a minimum
permissible value for utility aircraft. If I increase the gross weight to
1,800, I now have a maneuvering load factor of only + 3.5. Do I now have a
problem? What do I show in the operating manual?

[rebel-builders] Rebel Gross Weight

Post by Ken » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:20 pm

A year ago MDRA HQ held me up for awhile over the weight. Very
frustrating since at that point the airplane is ready to fly and the
builder does not want to drag things out with a fight. Then after the
25 hours and the climb test, the Ontario MOT office looked on the Murphy
website and reluctantly agreed that maybe 1730 on wheels wasn't too
dangerous since that was what the web site claimed on floats. They both
asked for documentation for the weight that I asked for and then totally
ignored it. As far as I'm concerned they are not qualified to judge the
weight analysis anyway and shouldn't pay much attention to websites but
I guess it is a good stalling and moderating tactic for them and it lets
them inflate their power and importance. MDRA HQ (who never saw the
airplane) even suggested that maybe it should really be a ultralight and
also ignored the inspectors decision! So anyone who wants an increase
may have difficulty if the documentation refers to "Murphy" or "Rebel"
anywhere. hint hint

That said most of us don't really know enough about the implications of
raising the gross. My main motivation was just to make sure that the
insurance company doesn't have an out if I happen to overload by a bit.
I will probably ask for an additional 5% when it goes on floats anyway
;) but the policy seems to be ever changing and inconsistant.
