[rebel-builders] rudder hinges

Post by Bob Patterson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:19 pm

Hi Jason !

The Rebel builders have been using "pogs" for this purpose
for years - they are large nylon washers with a split on 1 side
of the hole, so you can slide them off without removing the
bolt. I think Wayne still sells them ....

These are used on the elevator & aileron ends, as well -
wherever you are worried about contact & wear ...

What have others done here? Grease? Installed delrin,
nylon, or AN flat washers as a bearing? Any advice
would be appreciated.

[rebel-builders] rudder hinges

Post by Richard Wampach » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:19 pm

Jason; as I recall a few years back Bob Patterson beep@sympatico.ca had
a recommendation to use a Teflon, or similar material, washer at the top
hinge point to lift the rudder and avoid metal to metal contact. I
think he recommended the same on some of the horizontal surfaces also.
I would make that an annual recheck item for wear, and replace them once
and a while.

[rebel-builders] rudder hinges

Jason

For the Elite we spec'd out part number 654-010 from Spaenaur at .257" ID x .875" OD x .062" thick. Nylon,
not particularly expensive and probably as good a fit for the SR. Not sure if they'd fit a Rebel, none of
those in my neighbourhood.

There's a ref on our build site under the rudder page.

Cheers,

Dave

Wayne G. O'Shea

[rebel-builders] rudder hinges

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:20 pm

SR hinge set up is way different than the Rebel. I haven't looked at whether
there is room in between for one on each...but I doubt it. I hat bushinged
my/Rob's SR rudder pivots. Oil between the mating parts will keep the alum
from wearing into each other I suspect.
