[rebel-builders] Fibreglass loft insulation

I haven't seen it done but it doesn't surprize me that someone would try
it. I think it would be best to reassemble without it. What are you
rebuilding that required the floor removal?

[rebel-builders] Fibreglass loft insulation

Post by Bob Patterson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:16 pm

Hi Peter !

Had heard of someone who used Styrofoam ...
yet another REALLY BAD IDEA !!!

You definitely want to get it out of there, and leave the spaces
empty ! The air will be a better insulator ;-)

It's a good idea to drill a 1/8" hole in front of each bulkhead,
all the way down the belly. This will allow water to drain, and
the bit of air that comes in will help keep it dry in there.

If noise really is an issue (not for me !), you can cover the
top of the floor with insulated bubble pack - this looks like the
plastic bubbles used for packing, except it has silver foil
on both sides. Available in rolls from lumber & farm supply
stores. Comes in various thicknesses - 1/4" or so works
well. I've used this before, in doors, on firewalls, in ceiling,
and in a curtain for the baggage area. it's VERY light, and
helps insulate sound AND heat, and it's cheap ! You can
use 2 or 3 layers if you want..... glue light fabric to it,
and you have headliner, or carpet for the rear ! :-)

Hi Bob,
thank for your reply, I suppose closed cell styrofoam would be ok but not
polystyrene foam, thanks for your tip for the bubble pack I will see if I
can source it in the UK. regards , Peter

[rebel-builders] Fibreglass loft insulation

Post by peter gibbs » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:16 pm

Hi Drew,
yes thought it was a bad idea, those voids looked tempting I suppose. My
rebuild is due to the previous owner putting it through a fence and ripping
off the undercarriage, then I discovered this fiberglass so out came the
floor ! !

Hi Peter

I found this after a bit of searching...
http://www.sheffins.co.uk/products/show ... 35&SubCatI
D=72

I think there is a SI distributor in my local town of Loughborough, I'll
call in next time I'm passing and see if it looks like the same stuff.

Good luck on the rebuild, wonder where abouts you are ?
