[rebel-builders] Doublers/angle drill

Post by Jesse Jenks » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:12 pm

Ditto Mike,
Don't know how you could build one of these planes without 90* tight fit,
and what has been nearly as valuable to me is a "pancake". Really, really
helpful. You have to have some threaded drill bits for these things, but it
is so worth it. I got my stuff on ebay at very reasonable prices.

FWIW we have had some discussion about wrinkles at the bottom of the
wheel well sides just aft of the bulkhead that the gear mounts on. I
decided to increase the strength of the diagonal stringers and to tie
them into the vertical angles (FL202 ??) with a doubler there. A
doubler bonded with proseal might help but I'd sure prefer rivets into
the stringer and the vertical angles.

Drew - Princess Auto has a pneumatic angle drill advertised for $29.
this week. That's even cheaper than that angle attachment thingme for
dremels. Neither will get in as tight as the specialty aviation angle
attachments.

Hi guys I found a couple small wrinkles and cracks in my float wheelwell.
No leaks last year but I want to deal with this while I have the gear
apart
to install die springs. My question is are rivets really neccessary to
bond
a doubler to the inside of the wheel well side skin. I would need to get
a
right angle drill if I wanted to get holes in there but it would be
fairly
easy to clamp it in place with some wedges. I think I'll use pro-seal for
the bonding agent instead of sikaflex. Any comments?
Drew

[rebel-builders] Doublers/angle drill

Post by Jesse Jenks » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:12 pm

A pancake (other than being a tasty breakfast item) is a double 90*
attachment. It chucks in the drill and has a flat bar 90* to the drill. The
bit threads into the bar (gears inside the bar transfer the torque to the
bit). The bit ends up pointed in the same direction as the drill, but offset
about 3". I have also threaded the bit in the top of the bar so it points
back at you. Absolutely wonderful tool.
Look on ebay, there are usually some on there.

[rebel-builders] Doublers/angle drill

Drew

I also have crack in what sounds like the same spot. I think they appeared
after I started using my own strip which is still a little rough. I am interested
in how your spring conversion is going as I am thinking of doing the same.
Would prefer to use titanium springs if I can find some stock ones with the
right dimensions.
