Windshield Mounting

Post by steve whitenect » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:50 am

Hi All
Began the most dreaded task- THE WINDSHIELD!!!!! Have it trimmed in the
front with an even fit but still quite a bit of a bending or spring load on
the sides. It wants to rise up when I push the sides in. Has anyone cut
the top off of the windshield just behind the front square cage? I'm not
installing the roof windows so I don't see this as a problem. I may be
missing something but there doesn't seem to be anything holding this long
overlapped piece between the top retaining strip and the top of the side
strips? Did the rivets in the two small front windows take care of this?
Also in the instructions at the top of the side strips there is an
indication of 1 1/4 distance of what??? Cut the glass 1 1/4 down from the
wing attachment point?? doesn't make sence. Thanks for the anticipated
incoming help!

Hi Steve I'd suggest you'll never regret taking the time to install the
roof windows. It brightens the interior and improves visibility in turns. I
clamped the sides in place then used a couple weihts to hold the top down
while I installed the retaining strips. Not sure about the 1 1/4 measurment
but once you goop on the urethane sealer it's glued in place forever.

Windshield Mounting

Britt
I used less than a quart on both tanks for my Rebel. Leak tested overnight
after replacing several rivets that made bubbles and no leaks. Be very
liberal with the sealant and prepare the surfaces as everyone suggests and
it will be much less painful than a visit to the dentist. Would much rather
proseal than sit in the chair!!!

Wayne G. O'Shea

Windshield Mounting

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:50 am

Hard for me to remember...but I guess the first one was daunting. I guess I
just have it a little easier now with about 6 cracked ones around here to
use as check patterns to see which one fits the best...and then I take a
paper pattern and transfer to the new windshield. Quick trim with a Dremel
and 1" fiber cut wheel..blend the edges and drop in place.

Is your firewall cut back Steve???..creating a steeper windshield angle and
thus maybe you need more off the bottom to get it to sit right. Once mine
are trimmed the top edge sits nicely across the cabin top right in front of
the rivet row of the first bulkhead in the roof section. Note that the
windshield is moulded crooked and has been from day one. I used to trim an
angled strip off the top edge that started about 1/2" wide on one side and
down to nothing removed by the far side...to get a proper fit. I later found
a way to make it fit square across the top without trimming...by making
adjustments across the bottom edge instead just to cut down on the edges
being trimmed by one.

As for the area between the top of the side retainer and the top
retainer....This area will sit almost against the cabin roof. I let it do
it's own thing and just fill the space with sealant tape. When you do your
wing to fuselage fairings you will make them so they sit on this area (with
a rubber edging!) and the fairing will hide the gap where the windshield
"rounds the curve" around the front wing attach area.

Is that a reference to something I stated...1 1/4"?? If so it would be
refering to the amount of "glass" extending beyond the Fus-9's front edge!

Will send you a picture and will see if I can dig up some more detailed
ones.

Wayne

Windshield Mounting

Post by steve whitenect » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:50 am

Sorry for the second message, Wayne. I answered the first one without going
further in the list. I think this windshield has sat in a warm loft
sometime in its life probably upside down resting on the top curved portion.
It went thru two other owners before I bought it. It really curves down
towards the rivet row on top. I noticed the 1/2 inch cut that needs to be
done. I trimmed very little around the wing fittings and noticed that the
sides are also 1/2 to 3/4" off one side to the other plus what you indicated
on top. I caught the 1" shortening of the fus 9 on the threads earlier
today which will help a bit. The front has not been shortened. The 1 1/4
inch is indicated on fig 1 in the windshield install section #30. Thanks
again
