Paul, you are more than welcome! I really wasn't trying to sway you either
way, as the Northstar is a beautiful piece of engineering in it's own right!
I do have other planes in my hanger to fly for different "purposes" (mind
you 4 of them are Rebels right now!). I just find that I have the most fun
flying the Rebel! I guess it's a matter of would you rather have that
gorgeous gal co-pilot ride beside you, or in the back where you can't adore
her!!!!!

Don't lose too many nights sleep making your decision!

Blue skies,

Thanks for sharing your knowledge of the Northstar kit with me. Over the
past year, in my quest to find the right kit for myself, I've looked at
just
about everything available. In the past few months though I have narrowed
my
studies considerably and the Rebel has been at the top of my short list
for
some time. I think it's only natural for someone that decides a Rebel is
the
"right" plane for them to compare it with the Supercub or the Supercub
clones. I imagine that Murphy probably based at least some of the original
design goals for the Rebel on the Supercub. At the fly-in last weekend,
the
only other plane there that had me standing in a puddle of my own drool
was
an Aviat Husky - which I imagine is very close to a Northstar. I think
they
are beautiful aircraft and the visibility is almost unmatched but because
of
the "legendary" status of the Supercub they are, as you pointed out, way
overpriced.

I know I'm not going to get the most objective advise from the people on
the
Rebel Digest list but that's to be expected. I'm 98% sold already and it
sounds as though all I need is one ride in a Rebel and I'll be writing a
check!

Thanks again for the feedback.

Paul Irvine

Paul,

Something else to consider about tandem and side by side is, the C of G is
spread out across the envelope of the tandem design, increasing the moment of
inertia (did I say that right...?) which would allow for less cargo. I'm not
knowledgeable of the Super Cub loading parameters but I bet you can't put 175
lb. behind the rear seat of a Super Cub or Aviat Husky. Is there any one out
there that knows this to be true?

Bruce,

There's no problem carrying 2 x 4's in a Rebel ! Heck, they've
been flown with 2 people up front and a third lying down sleeping in
the back !! There isn't much difference in the total length of the fuse
between the Cub & the Rebel.

And you could yank the right seat out if you wanted to drop in a
stretcher - that was one of the original design objectives ...

That's a very interesting point, something I hadn't really thought of
outside of the fact that the baggage capacity of the Supercub is much less
than the Rebel. Wayne also brought up the point of having a very attractive
co-pilot along and wouldn't it be better to have her alongside rather than
behind. One possible advantage of the tandem seating arrangement I guess is
the ability to carry longer items like 2x4's or even a litter if needed. I
think each has it's purpose and what we all really need/want is two
airplanes instead of one.

Heck - probably at least three, wouldn't you think?
