[rebel-builders] Rebel -B & C SD-8 Alternator

Post by steve whitenect » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:56 am

Anyone else on the list using the light weight SD-8 alternator (vaccuum pad
mount) and set up from B&C Specialities? Installed this setup on my 0-320
last year and it worked flawlessly until yesterday. Having over voltage
problems which is most likely the regulator. All worked well when I last
flew it in Oct. Have a new reg on the way and B&C are telling me that the
newer regs (2-3 years in production) have rarely given any problems. Of
course it's off warranty the end of January past even though the plane
initially flew June 06.

My experience is with a different manufacturer but I agree that it is
very very likely to be the regulator. You've probably already checked
the wiring but do note that a bad connection can also cause overvoltage
and that a bad connection can fail some PM regulators permanently in
some cases. I had a John Deere regulator go max output permanently just
by starting the engine with a completely dead battery. Fortunately I had
overvoltage protection installed and nothing else was damaged. The folks
on the aeroelectric list speak highly of the SD-8.
