[rebel-builders] O-235

Post by Dan » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:55 am

I built one w/an O-235, 108hp out of a Piper Colt..Worked fine for me, got
it w/a metal Sensenich prop, for $3500, copletely overhauled it and flew it
for about 200hrs before I sold the acft..Flew an honest 105mph at cruise
rpm, got in and out OK, burned 6gph, maybe a little less. There is a company
that sells an adapter for an oil filter{ARC?} which I installed. Acft was
fairly tightly cowled and I never installed an oil cooler. Saw temps of 200
degrees on occasion but not often...Valves on older models were meant for
leaded fuel, so that can be a problem. That is my 2 cents.. HP is always
nice, though..

Drew Dalgleish

[rebel-builders] O-235

Post by Drew Dalgleish » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:55 am

Hi Jesse I went through this last year changing an 0-290 to an 0-320. The
mount can be the same for both engines but if you're looking for a used
0-320 you won't have as many choices as most 0-320s are dynafocal. I ended
up replacing all my baffles as the old ones didn't quite fit needed new
longer throttle and mixture controls and had to rework my carb air box and
lower cowl because the carb wasn't in the same place. What I thought was
going to be a simple swap took me 2 months of almost full time work. Also
you'll need a different prop and probably a new spinner. Plus I had to wait
for TC to inspect the plane and issue a new CofA. Unless floats are a
loooong way in the future I'd go with an 0-320 right from the start.

a long storage in a LIBRARY). He doesn't want the liability of selling a
flying AC, so he is going to sell the engine and donate the plane to a
museum. Anyway, I want an O-320, but here's an O-235 in good condition for
$6,000 in my neighborhood. I wanted to ask you guys what you think about
buying this engine now, and swapping for a 320 later when I build the
floats. I think someone said the mounting pattern is the same (conical I
assume?) what about the cowl/baffles etc? I also remember some comments
about certain 235s being not so good. This one doesn't have an oil filter
for one thing.
Any comments would be appreciated.
Thanks
Jesse

Wayne G. O'Shea

[rebel-builders] O-235

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:55 am

Don't know why I didn't get Jesse's original message, but will reply here.

I had an O-235-C (100HP) in my Rebel for the first few years and it worked
just fine on wheels, well at least until I got stuck one day on skis and
bought a fresh O-320-C2A (derated B2A).....could have just put UHMW on the
ski bottoms I suppose! ;O) !!

Other than the addition of an oil cooler and it's lines, the only change
required was to redrill for baffle attachment bolts, as they are in opposite
corners from an O-235 to an O-320. Throttle/Mixture cables worked without
any adjustment and I repitched my 70" 2 Blade Warp a tad coarser and am
still flying it to this day. The exhaust had enough slip joint left for the
1/4 to 3/8" the O-320 is wider than the O-235. So keep the exhaust in mind
if you go O-235 and be sure to have LOTS of slip joint over lap left in the
cross overs so when you go up to the O-320 the exhaust will still fit. I did
absolutely no cowling changes during the change over, except to open up the
bottom a bit after I was on floats due to high temps. The O-320 is a little
deeper at the carb box and it is rubbing slightly on my cowl intake area,
but nothing I'm gonna fix till it rubs thru the alum.

[rebel-builders] O-235

Post by Drew Dalgleish » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:55 am

My problem was I went from a narrow deck engine to a wide deck. I could
have reused the side baffles but they were worn and cracked. The front and
rear baffles almost fit but there was no way to make them work. Also on the
wide deck engine the carb sits farther forward and off to one side.
