I use a carpenter's leather pouch for clecoes and pliers. keeps things from
falling out plus they're handy.

The dropped thing must be what happened to my fast build wings and fin that
were supplied from the MAM. Hopefully the painter can make them look better.

Post by Keith Leitch » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:43 am

John,
LOL! My Rebel is not for here. My wife is in the Army
and we are stationed here for another year. I sent the
wing kit over here to have something to do while I am
here. I will eventually have the plane at my house in
MN. I have a 1000 ft strip on my place there and spend
the summers through the end of deer season there. I am
in the process of builing a log house also so the
Rebel is making very slow process.

No problem contacting me as long as it is before April
11. I will be heading to MN then.

LOL!! Not hardly. Guess I'm just anal. Not a
perfectionist by any means but I know I spend way too
much time trying to make things look good. Especially
since it will be kept at my farm and used in the
woods.
Thanks guys for the humor. It is needed occasionally
to stop me from going nuts!!

[rebel-builders] CRAP!!! Dropped a cleco!

Post by bransom » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:43 am

Hi Guys,
I've been out of touch a few weeks due to my mom passing away unexpectedly
end of January. Looking forward to getting back onto some normal things,
especially rebel building.

I'm a little surprised a dropped cleco dents the skin. You sure you didn't
throw it out of frustration with something? :) The thing I had trouble
with was turning the wing over and accidentally letting it down with a
cleco hitting 2x4 spacer blocks on the table -- it pushes the cleco over
sideways and puts a smiley in the skin. I found best to leave such dents,
as trying to dolly them flat just expands the metal making things worse.
Fortunately, just a couple and they'll not show unless I was crazy enf to
go for some dark shiny paint job.

Congratulations Mike Betti for turning all that aluminum into an airplane.
I think you started just a little before me, and I recall you zipping
right past! Picture looks great. All the best on your upcoming flight testing.

Post by Ken » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:43 am

Go ahead and paint her bright and shiny!
You'll never notice small dents on the wing.
You may notice them on places you inspect up close or that are in your
normal line of sight like the top of the stab or the leading edge by the
fuel caps but even then there are so many rivet heads that a lot of
minor bruises are effectively camouflaged. I do have one small dent
hidden under some bondo but it was by the door and I didn't want to be
reminded every time I opened the door...

There are guys here that know how to shrink metal and take out bruises
but I'd suggest trying a wooden mallet and a steel backing dolly. A
steel hammer and steel dolly definately stretches the metal and makes a
dish.

Post by Walter Klatt » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:43 am

Once you are on floats, any cleco dents on your wing or fuse will not be
noticeable compared to the hundred little dings you are going to have on
your left float side skin, and a few on your right one, too. And if you
don't have any, you won't get much respect if you stop in at any floatplane
base.

[rebel-builders] CRAP!!! Dropped a cleco!

Post by Tim Hickey » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:43 am

Good Luck on the first flight, Mike.
I am sure that you have checked and re-checked everything that you can think
of, and that the (pretty) bird is ready. From my own experience of a first
flight (my Zenith CH-300) I offer the following: Figure out how much fuel
you will need, and then double it. On my first flight (no, it was
successful) I ran much closer to the bottom of the tank that I should have.
It is a long story, but I ended up having to make three approaches to get
one landing. And while you may flight plan a Lyc O-320 at 8+ gallons per
hour, they drink 12 + gallons per hour at full throttle. Which is where my
fist flight spent a lot of time. Of all the mistakes one can make, running
out of gas is the hardest one to explain.
