Thank you to those who offered their advice about renting from U-haul. You

now have me second guessing my decision to truck the Rebel, floats and
cowling moulds back to Burlington, Ont.. At this point in time I don't see

as I have much of a choice as two flights have already been booked for Feb.
13th. along with a hotel room in Victoria and the U-haul. I know the U-haul

can be cancelled with 24 hour notice but where do I go from there? Buget
doesn't rent one way to the eastern provinces. The only thing I can do is
insist on a newer decent truck and keep my fingers crossed. I am open to
any other suggestions but it looks like I am going to need a lot of luck. I

will keep you posted.

[rebel-builders] U-haul advice

Post by Ken » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:42 am

I've only used Ryder once but was very happy with the transaction. Up
front the price seemed a bit higher but it wasn't really as the exact
truck was ready to go on time at the specified location and it was a
diesel. Their policy was "bring it back full or empty, we will make
sure it is topped up same as we do before you take it, and our price per
liter is the same as anywhere else in town".

OTOH we have an outstanding issue with a third not mentioned company who
signed for the return of a truck with no damage but several days later
decided a door mysteriously needed a dent fixed at our cost. I can
understand discovering hidden damage at a later date but a door dent??
AFAIK it was not dented when returned but the thing was dirty when we
got it and dirty when returned. As per most agreements, the fine print
keeps you liable for a significant damage deductible even when you pay
for their damage insurance. Automobile and credit card polices generally
don't cover anything other than passenger carrying vehicles... My last
U-haul was a diesel though and at least with U-haul nobody ever hinted
that we increased the damage ;)

[rebel-builders] U-haul advice

Hi Randy,,One suggestion would be to check the Rebel out.. Make arrangements
to fly it home soon as safely possible and truck the rest home which is very
doable. You will accomplish all set out goals this way. If you haul it (the
Rebel) and have damage to it you could be longer fixing and costly then
flying it home. I would have to say hind sight is 20/20 (alot clearer after
things happen then before). Most of the guys that offer advice are speaking
from experience. Just my 2 cents.. Dale SR-033 N269DF

Randy-

I will second the idea of using Ryder instead of U-Haul. Their equipment is
newer, and they buy better to start with. Many years ago, I trucked a project
from Pittsburgh to western New York in a Ryder, no problem. I rented a U-Haul
to do a 12 mile move and had all sorts of issues.

And to answer your next question, I have no relatives on the board of
directors for Ryder!

Good luck on the move!

[rebel-builders] U-haul advice

Post by John Kramer » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:42 am

Years ago I rented a Ryder truck for a move from Denver to
Atlanta. It was one of the worst experiences of my
life. Breakdowns, bad handling, unable to exceed 55mph downhill,
often down to 20mph uphill; I used to ride hardtail Harleys and the
Ryder truck was harder on my kidneys. Stopped for repairs in KC & St
Louis & should have in Nashville. The trip took 6 days longer than
it should have. Ryder didn't care.

[rebel-builders] U-haul advice

Post by Ron Shannon » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:42 am

Thanks for that tip, Ted.

For my upcoming move from CA to WA, U-Haul quotes a 26' truck at $2700
for five days, with limited mileage. That's so high I was thinking I'd
have to use a flatbed trailer for the fuse in one trip, then another
trip with a smaller truck for the rest.

Penske quotes the same size truck with unlimited mileage at just $1034!
Another 3 days (enough time to make TWO trips, which I'll need) is only
$200 more, making the Penske choice a no-brainer, at least on cost basis.

[rebel-builders] U-haul advice

Ron, I don't know why U-haul is so costly in the USA but my quote is $819.00
Canadian for one way from Vancouver Island to the Toronto area in Ontario.
This is for a 26 footer for up to 5100 Km. which is about 3200 miles and 10
days. I will be travelling about 2800 miles so I have lots to spare. Maybe
they are renting me a bucket of bolts pulled by a team of horses. We will
see on Wed. when we pick up the truck in Victoria B.C.. I have a feeling
this will be a trip I will never forget. They are already calling for snow
Tues. afternoon and into the evening. Think the flight might get
delayed????? Well that could be the whole schedule out the window before I
even get started.

Hey, My advice. Fly the airplane home if it is flyable. Or pay someone to do it.
Taking wings off, landing gear, etc is a pain in the ass. You are also asking for damage during the crating, shipping and reassembly.

As a pilot, watch the wx., talk to locals regarding the route, and just do it.

I dunno why it's so different, but suspect they may have different rates
for different routes. I'd love to fly it instead, but that's still
several months of building away, at best.

Walter Klatt

[rebel-builders] U-haul advice

Post by Walter Klatt » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:42 am

Weather has been great here (Vancouver) lately (hit +17C in Surrey on Sat),
but that is changing this week with rain as you say, starting mid week. That
means snow in the mountains, and to be honest with you, I would not be
wanting to drive a truck through the mountains in those conditions. I am
almost surprised the rental company would even let you do that. At the very
least, you will need to carry chains and use them in the passes. Then you
better hang on going down some of the steeper grades when it is snow and
ice. It is nothing like you have ever seen before, so be warned.

I am not just trying to scare you. I have driven in the mountains with a
well equipped 4 wheel drive in those conditions, and it was a real
challenge. I can't imagine trying to do it with one of those rear wheel
drive dual wheel trucks they give you. Once one wheel starts spinning
(differential) on a hill, that's it, you're going nowhere.

I agree with others, flying would be much easier and safer, even if you have
to wait out the weather a few days here and there. My biggest concern
actually would be flying a Rebel in the cold. Heard it was -30C on the
prairies. But it should be warming up soon.

Walter

Just a quick note, I rented a car hauler from Uhaul and used my bench as

Ken,
Prices vary a lot from week to week, depending on the shortage or
surplus of vehicles in an area. Sometimes round trip is cheaper than
one way, or drop off to a different place than your intended
destination.
