[rebel-builders] Flying off hours

We talking USA or Canada?

Subject: [rebel-builders] Flying off hours

If I complete the aircraft and have it inspected for air worthyness at a
one
location, can the aircraft be ferried to my home airport to fly off the
hours?

Or when I start flying off the hours at the inspection/build site, can I
change
my home base to another airport within the 50 mile radius while flying off
the
hours?

The build site is about 70 miles from my home airport, however, there is
another airport in between that is <50 miles.

I would like to take my time and fly off the bulk of the remaining time at
my
home airport, but it seems that the only way to get it there is to take
the
wings off and trailer it home to fly off the hours?

Is there any other solution?

Scratch that question...I already know you're in the USA...we only have a 25
mile radius here in Canada!

Can't help you with any certainty...In Canada you would get a flight permit
to go from A to B if it's outside a 25 mile radius of "home" base. You then
have to get your base of operation changed on your flight permit/Cof A. I
even had to have Port Severn changed to Penetanguishene for Leah's "new"
Zero hour homebuilt CH701. It's only about 5 miles by air to Port Severn.

Yes you can get special permissoin to ferry to your home base. You can also
get a restricted flying area that is greater than 50 miles... it's really up
to the inspector. What you might try is centering your restricted area on
your home base with a dog leg that includes your initial airport. This way
you can make your initial flights around that airport, but ferry it home
when ready. Just ask your inspector, they should be willing to work with
you.

That would be great Mike. I also might want to fly back to the build site to
have a good friend inspect the aircraft before the hours are flown off.

I will talk to the local FAA inspector.

I'd suggest taking an old sectional and highlighting the area you'd "like"
to have, and present that to your inspector. The area I got when I
registered my MX was huge! I couldn't fly to the far edge of it on a full
tank of gas. Of course, this is Alaska, and there's nothing out there to
preclude my flying over it.

Sure!
Just explain to the examiner what your intentions are and he may even allow
a corridor to go to and from your place of inspection. There is no real
golden rule with the 50nm radius, but most of the inspectors do abide by it. They
may just change the home airport to allow the 50nm to cover the area you
want. Nothing says you have to park your aircraft at the center of the 50nm
circle. Just explain the reason for the change in your application and you
should do ok.
