[rebel-builders] Rebel -Tail-spring bulkhead - FUS-30

Hi Ron !

If I recall - what you can't see behind that "X" pattern, is
that it is fastening pieces of wing stringer on the inside,
for extra stiffness .... or you could use angle or channel...

I'm with Wayne - a bunch of extra rivets, along with
slathers of epoxy primer in between layers, is a "Good Thing"(tm)
to really tie these 2 FUS-30's together !

Certainly, extra rivets around the cut-out holes are
important - the second layer will be effective as a doubler,
IF it is rivetted in the same pattern.

Wayne, as I described, the elevator tube holes were cut on the
underlying original fuse skin first, with the tubes & elevators in
place, so they should be fine.

I copied the rivet pattern from the picture of this design of FUS-30
doubler in the archives that Bob P. was recommending, particularly the
new "X" rivet pattern in the aft portion, and tying into several rivets
of FUS-89. It's quite solidly tied to everything, but as you suggest,
perhaps it could use even more.

Ron....when you get the push pull tubes in and you know they clear the
holes
(they will probably will need some minor opening..they always do) remember
to go back and drill around the oval cutout and rivet the two Fus-30's
together there. If it was me I'd have a lot more rivets in the flat
surfaces
of that doubling Fus-30 as well, to really make them work as one unit.

Hi Bob,

As I mentioned in the original post, I will definitely rivet around the
elevator tube holes. Just holding off on that until I finalize location
of the tube fairings. There's oodles of epoxy primer slathered in there.

I hadn't heard (or registered) before about additional stiffening
framework inside the aft "X" rivet pattern. But because this doubler was
an add-on, I probably wouldn't have done that anyway due to lack of
access to that interior space.

Hi Ron !

That Rebel had a lot of extra beef-ups -- not saying the stringer
bits are necessary back there ---- but it doesn't hurt either ... ;-)

Certainly not essential ....

Thanks for the pics in your gallery - looks like you're making
great progress ! You COULD make the Ramble this year, in
your own Rebel !!! :-)
Looking forward to a great time !

Bob,

Thanks for the encouragement. It would sure be nice to fly the Ramble in
254R. However, after 29 years in Santa Cruz, CA, we've decided to move
to the airpark at WA59 (http://tinyurl.com/yyxkwe) outside Sequim, WA,
sometime in the next 2-3 months. That process will really slow me down.
Life interrupts art, once again. :-) Just moving the Rebel project,
tools and equipment (a couple of big truck loads!) will be a huge chore,
not to mention moving our 29 years of household accumulations (a.k.a.,
packratitis).

On the plus side, I'll then have the project in my own hangar just 40
yds. from the house, instead of 40 miles away as it is now, so my pace
should really pick up. In fact, it will be heaven.

Ramble? I haven't given up hope! :-)
