[rebel-builders] rivet removal tool

Post by Robert Andrews » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:30 am

Jason,

I have no experience with the tool you mention. Sounds like you just need
more practice. Buck thirty or so rivets into some scrap sheet stock ... and
then drill them out. The more you do, the better you get at it.

Hi all,

I have some solid rivets to remove to install my tail
beef-up kit. Has anyone ever used one of the rivet
removal tools like Aircraft Spruce sells? (Part no
TP-276 on page 546 of their catalog)

I have tried drilling out solid rivets before but
almost always end up slightly enlarging the hole when
I punch the tail out.

Any advise would be appreciated.

Thanks, -Jason

[rebel-builders] rivet removal tool

Post by Ted Waltman » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:30 am

Hello Jason,

I've used that tool a whole bunch of times. Basically it just helps you
start & then keep the drill centered on the rivet head. Yes, it works.
That being said, after drilling out hundreds and now a few thousand rivets,
it is faster and just as good --IF-- you're careful and just use the drill
without any attachments. You just have to hit the head square, start
drilling slowly, stop--examine the hole for on-center--then adjust your
drilling angle if you're not on center. Also helps to buy cobalt drills, in
that as you think you're close to getting thru the head, you can move the
drill one way or the other and use the drill to pop the head off (the point
being that you pop the head off before you drill the head off--thereby
preventing you from perhaps enlarging the hole). That being said, you're
going to enlarge some holes--it just happens.

[rebel-builders] rivet removal tool

... you may already know these tricks ... but just in case.

To repair a damaged hole, reverse a set of pop rivet dimple dies such that
the flush sides are facing each other with the hole (flat stock) inbetween
... and squeeze. This will flatten the hole edges to be co-planer with the
surrounding flat stock.

W.r.t getting the tail of a drilled rivet out. If the skin is thin (e.g.
0.020), its sometimes better to grab and remove the rivet tail using a pair
of side cutters with the side ground flush to the cutting edge then to bang
it out with a punch.

[rebel-builders] rivet removal tool

Post by Robert Johnson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:30 am

Hi Jason: I have had to remove lots of solid rivets on this so called "quick
build" Moose. I start be accenting the dimple with a spring loaded center
punch, drill part way thru with a # 40 drill, followed with a #30 just to
the point where you can pop the head off. I have had very few enlarging
problems but to have zero is impossible. Looking at the tool you speak off,
I doubt it would reduce the error factor, just start with a sharp #40. Keep
plugging away. - Bob J

[rebel-builders] rivet removal tool

Fortunately, I have not had to remove a lot of rivets.

Yet...

But one time when I visited Dale Fultz at his shop, he demonstrated for me a
"home made" rivet drill guide that made the job look quick and easy. And a
lot simpler and less expensive then Aircraft Spruce's model.

Hopefully, Dale can provide additional detail next time he is on.

Only thing I'd add to all the thoughts is that occasionally when I can't
get the drill bit centered I will use a rivet shaving tool with a
microstop to shave the head off to the point where what is left pretty
much falls off. Also works on avex rivets where the steel mandrel
interferes with the bit centering and you can'd knock or pull the
mandrel out of the way.

Right guys, sounds like I am doing ok with my manual
operation. I think I will skip the tool and just go
slow.

Thanks, -Jason

Richard Wampach

[rebel-builders] rivet removal tool

Post by Richard Wampach » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:30 am

Jason, Interesting that you are at that point. Last week I drilled off
the tail parts to do the beef up mod and install Dale's improved tail
wheel mounts and stinger, and to mate the tail fin rear spar.

Many of the temporary (large head) rivets spun on me. I used a
different tool from Aircraft Tool Supply made for blind rivet removal
and it is called a "Blind Rivet Removal Tool" Part number 1341. Priced
at $52.95, about the same as Spruce, but a little less pricy. It comes
in a kit with 4 sizes and looks a little like a miniature hole saw which
holds the head from spinning with the drill in the center. It did a
pretty good job of keeping the drill bit in the center. I also tried it
on a bunch of the solid type rivets (AN-470-AD---) and it did a good job
holding the center. This tool and the advice of the others whom have
responded should get you through the drill out process.

AS A helpful hint, I frequently have 2 to 4 drill motors ready with
different bits in them to keep from having to change out the bits all
the time when I need a different one. I find myself unwilling to change
them in the chuck, but I don't mind swapping motors.

[rebel-builders] Rivet Removal tool

Post by Richard Wampach » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:52 am

Richard:

If you do decide to use a rivet removal tool, 2 companies I know of sell
them.

Aircraft tool Supply, (800)-248-0638, PN 1341S.
Aircraft Spruce, (877)-477-7823, PN TP-276.

These tools have an outer guide much like a miniature hole saw which
grips the rivet head and keeps it from spinning, and the drill bit
inside of it is the same style as you would use in a 90* drill motor
(1/4-28 threaded)about 2 inches long. I have found them to be very
useful in removing Murphy's temporary large head AVEX rivets, also does
a good job of centering the bit when removing AN-470 rivets.

Presuming you're working with the typical Avex rivit all you need is an
automatic centre punch and your normal #30 drill. Give the mandrel a
couple of hits with the punch to drive it back and drill the head off
the rivit. You can use the punch again to drive the remains of the
rivit out of the underlying layers of metal. You may need to knock the
mandrel back more than once during the drilling.

Cheers
