[rebel-builders] Rebel - Horizontal Stabilizer

Post by Bob Patterson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:26 am

Hi Gary !

Sorry to hear you've been confined, but glad you are on the way
back to the hangar ! The quicker you get it flying, the happier
you'll be, and the less likely you will be to want to change ANYTHING !! ;-)

It's not JUST a question of the fuselage structure being beefier,
it's that the whole stabilizer has to be re-done ! The spars must be
much deeper, and additional attach points have to be added, & aligned
vertically, on the stab, AND the fuselage, and stringers are added to
the skins to distribute the loads - it's a major engineering job.
It could easily add a year to build times, and would most probably
give you a much less satisfactory handling airplane than the
original Rebel. So far, NO other kit has beaten the wonderful control
harmony and flight qualities of the Rebel ! (Just MHO ! ;-) )

Thanks for the many comments and I was sure that I could count on a
prod from Wayne. PS Not to make you feel bad - I have had a hard time
this past 13 months after many operations, confined to bed with limited
up time (1/2 hour twice a day), and no ability to see my plane. It is
a hanger queen wanting some attention. My brother is over here now to
help and I should be able to work on it more and more. Next step is to
start the engine. My problem is that I have had too much time while lying
in bed to think up off-beat questions. So I appreciate the confirmation
of my thoughts.

One last question - how has the Elite tail cone area been beefed up to
support its cantilever tail?

Soon to be back working on the Rebel.

Gary...stick to the manual! The tail cone of the Rebel is not set up to take

the torsion loads of a cantilever tail. We'd like to hear your flying
reports...not your wife posting you are no longer "on-line".

Since there has been some recent discussion about Horizontal
Stabilizers, I thought that I would ask a question about
making the horizontal stabilizer all one piece (rather than
in two pieces). It would clean up the aerodynamics a bit by
eliminating the support struts and the block by the tail
wheel spring. However I suspect that the internal tail cone
would have to be beefed up and the stabilizer spars would
have to be tied together.

Has it been done before? What is entailed?

[rebel-builders] Rebel - Horizontal Stabilizer

Thanks for you words of encouragement. I used to spend 5 or
6 days a week for 8 to 10 hours a day and then went to not being
able to go at all. I have not seen my plane for 13 months, but will
go tomorrow as a first step in resuming the old routine. Will start
adding to the work list and begin work soon. I have built to the
Murphy plans and installed needed mods (OShea firewall kit, tail
cone wrap, verticle stabilizer doubler, etc.) and some options
(OShea coil spring etc.). So it is pretty much stock.

I have installed the O320 and it is ready to start for the first time
soon as I flush the engine and install a temporary gas can. I have
a GRT EIS to monitor the engine start. That is my next milestone,
which has been delayed for a year now, but I am ready as soon as
is possible.

I do look forward to my first flight and still recall my first flight in a
Rebel from Everett Field in Washungton. I was very impressed with
the Rebel and the easy of flying it. In fact I was impressed enough
to buy Rebel 242 from its previous owner and continue the process
of completing it. The previous owner did a very good job and I hope
to have continued with the quality standard that he set. I do want to
get back to work and maybe join in a Rebel Ramble some day.

In the meantime I enjoy the emails and have gotten some very
helpful information that will help me complete #242. The doc says
that I should be back full time in January.

Lastly, I guess I will stop all thought of a cantilever tail stabilizer. It
was a question that I thought may not require too much internal cone
aupport. But thanks for setting me straight. However I will look at
an Elite and talk to Daryl at the next Sun n'Fun here in Florida.
