[rebel-builders]Rebel - Allowable Gross Weight

Post by Bob Patterson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:16 am

Hi Gary !

As Wayne says, it depends on whether the mods were added -
there are several Rebels below serial number 100 that ARE 1,650 gross
airplanes. I believe number 007 has been updated to 1650....
as was #068, which was originally built as a 1,550 (heavier gear).

The hard part is - you can't tell just by the serial number,
unless it's over 200 or more ... I have #230, and it's a 1,650
Rebel, but there were some U/L Rebels with higher numbers, that
have only 1,058 gross !

Check for the mods Wayne mentions - you are likely OK !

In reading the Safety Bulletin 071095RB, I read the following about Gross
Weight::
“According to regulations, certified aircraft are allowed an additional 5%
of the stated gross weight when operating on floats. As we have tested the
Rebel design exhaustively in wheel and float configurations, we have decided
to apply the same rule to this aircraft. In the case of the Rebel this would
mean an additional 80 lbs on top of the stated 1650 lb limit for a total of
1730 lbs.
Important Note: Early models of the Rebel which were rated at 1450 lbs
gross, would be limited to an additional 5% of 1450 or 70 lbs for a total of
1520 lbs. This variance does not apply to Canadian Advanced Ultralights which
are governed by Transport Canada’s TP 101.41.â€

There are some gotcha's. For example someone has mentioned that the
builder only installed a partial upgrade kit where the spar cap strips
were not installed in the area of the strut attachment. Those are about
1" x 1/4" strips bolted to the spar and they would be visible through
the strut attach inspection port if you have inspection ports. Anyway
I'd add those to Wayne's list. Another is to insure you really have the
forward rib located 6" from the root rib and not just rivets filling
empty holes where the rib should be. And of course the doubled forward
root rib. I would be surprised if anyone has done a complete 1650
upconversion on a closed up lower weight wing unless it still had
plastic fuel tanks at the time but the upgrade kit was available quite
early on.

"If you have did the leading edge rib 6 " out from the root and the W161
forward attach reinforce angles and have a .063 main spar.... your Gross
weight per MAM is 1650lbs Gary....if you have the 1650 gear legs (ie 1 1/4"
main leg with 1" stub at top for attachment)"
