[rebel-builders] STOL mods build schedule

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:13 am

Just tell MAM to smart'n'up and include the "Ontario mods" while building
the darn thing and call it a day. Just like ordering a new Lund boat you
should be able to request upgrades for when it's built on the line.

:O)

Hello everyone,
My new family and busy work schedule force me to consider the new quick-
build rebel kits from MAM if I am to build my own plane. My concern is
whether the well known Mackenzie/Fife and Ontario mods everyone raves
about are best integrated DURING or AFTER major component completion.

I believe the Mackenzie STOL/Fife modifications can be incorporated well
after the wing is complete. Is this also the case for all the Ontario
mods? I
would hate to have to drill out rivets (essentially backtrack) to include
these.

If anyone can summarize the most popular modifications (dangerous
question,
I know) and when they are usually installed in the plane, I could
potentially
ask MAM to leave certain parts out during their quick-build process....

any takers?

Thanks for your time,
Rob Schaum

[rebel-builders] STOL mods build schedule

Post by N.Smith » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:13 am

Hi Rob

Welcome aboard :-)

I would hazard a guess that most are best done at the build stage, although
drilling out rivets becomes second nature after a while during a build, so
it's not such a big deal.

If you search the archive I'm fairly sure there is already a list of the
Ontario mod's on there somewhere, possibly in the files section ?

It might not be possible to get a fast build without all the rivets
installed prior to shipping to you, in case of distortion during the
shipping.

Either way, you'll have fun in the build

[rebel-builders] STOL mods build schedule

Post by Ken » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:13 am

Hi Rob

If the quick builds are being done in Chiliwack, I'd love to hear what
MAM says if you took Wayne's advice and actually asked MAM for a quote
on one with any specific mods that you decide are important such as the
doubler on Fus-30. If lots of guys are doing a particular mod anyway it
makes some sense that the factory might recognize it and give the
customer what he wants. I find avex rivets very easy to remove but don't
think I'd want to remove a lot of solid rivets if they are being used in
the quickbuilds. IMO some of the mods we talk about are not really
necessary depending on where you live, how you plan to use it, and what
engine you use. Except for moving the firewall (which most guys don't
recommend anyway), once you accumulate some building skills, most mods
are not overly difficult to do later as long as it isn't painted.

FWIW I would hesitate to buy any partial built kits that have components
closed up and difficult to inspect. I suppose it's a way of obtaining
free or almost free labour if the workmanship is good though. Partial
builts seldom command more money than the cost of materials. You'd need
someone with building experience to help you inspect a partial built. I
don't believe that my partial built saved me any time or money but it
did get me started -whereas otherwise I might not have got around to
ordering a kit.

Wingtips and I guess elevator and rudder tips are a no brainer and if
Dave Fife's aren't available when you need them, some of us have unused
factory tips collecting dust. I can't think of anything else that is
worth asking MAM to remove from a kit. I didn't use any of the brass
plumbing fittings but doubt they give much credit for those. Last I
talked to Angus Mackenzie
he currently did not have anybody to roll his cuffs but I'd still
dimple those 3 rivets per rib to make cuffs easy to install.

[rebel-builders] STOL mods build schedule

Post by schaumr » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:13 am

Ken,
Thanks for your reply.
I agree, buying a partially complete kit from a private builder is a "buyer-
beware" exercise.
That's why the quick-build option seems more attractive to me (They are
built in Mexico, I believe). I did look over the list of common modifications
and saw that several are now "standard" in the new Rebel kits. The other
thing I'm considering is the fact that you can buy quick-build "subkits". So, if
the Mackenzie STOL can be applied to a fully assembled wing, I'd order the
wing fully built, but elect to build the fuselage on my own (since most mods
appear to be in the fuselage).

I will approach MAM with your suggestion and see what they say. You'd
think that since I'm paying for the labor, I should be able to
request "reasonable" modifications. I'm willing to wager though, that MAM
wouldn't feel comfortable with this since they'd have no real way of
maintaining quality control over components produced this way.

I may just have to get someone to help me evaluate a partially complete kit
afterall...

Really appreciate everyone's input!
Rob
